Early childhood development and its association with maternal parity

M. Mofizul Islam et al.

Summary: Maternal parity is negatively correlated with early childhood development, particularly in the literacy-numeracy domain. Participation in early childhood education programs is significantly associated with early childhood development. Female children, non-stunted children, children in rural areas, children who receive parental stimulation activities, children from relatively wealthy households, and children whose mothers have received secondary or further education are more likely to be on track for early childhood development.

Do parental stimulation practices modify the effect of child's health status on early developmental risk? Findings from a hospitalized cohort

Muneera A. Rasheed et al.

Summary: This study in Pakistan showed that parental stimulation practices can modify the impact of general child health status on early developmental risks in hospitalized children. Children with poor health status are more likely to experience developmental delays with parents who have lower engagement, while those with higher engagement are more at risk of behavior and emotional problems. The findings suggest that parental engagement and developmental screening could be integrated into pediatric assessments for in-patients.

Harsh Physical Discipline and Externalizing Behaviors in Children: A Systematic Review

Marthe Wiggers et al.

Summary: This literature review examines the impact of harsh physical discipline on child behavior and educational outcomes. The results suggest a strong association between parental corporal punishment and child behaviors, with cultural normativeness as a potential moderator. However, the primary limitation of the studies is the use of self-report data and correlational analyses.

Corporal punishment and early childhood development in 49 low-and middle-income countries

Jorge Cuartas

Summary: Research has found that children exposed to corporal punishment are less likely to be developmentally on track compared to those who are not. The association between child development and corporal punishment may be driven by challenges in social-emotional development, and no positive developmental outcomes were associated with corporal punishment in any country.

Physical punishment and child outcomes: a narrative review of prospective studies

Anja Heilmann et al.

Summary: This narrative review of 69 longitudinal studies showed that physical punishment consistently predicts increased behavior problems in children over time, is associated with a higher risk of involvement with child protective services, and can lead to worsening behavior in children. The detrimental outcomes of physical punishment are robust across various child and parent characteristics.
