Environmental fate of five brominated flame retardants co-exposure in a water-sediment-zebrafish microcosm system: Enrichment, removal, and metabolism mechanisms

Zhihua Qiao et al.

Summary: Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are commonly used in electronic products and their release into the environment has led to frequent occurrence and detection. This study examined the environmental fate of multiple BFRs in a water-sediment-zebrafish microcosm system, focusing on enrichment and clearance experiments. The results showed that liver, intestine, and gill were the top three tissues enriched in BFRs, and BFRs can be transferred between generations. The average compositions and clearance half-lives of different BFRs varied, highlighting the complexity of their behavior in organisms.

Diafenthiuron causes developmental toxicity in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Menglan Su et al.

Summary: The developmental toxicity and hepatotoxicity of diafenthiuron in zebrafish were investigated in this study. Results showed that diafenthiuron exposure significantly shortened the body lengths of zebrafish larvae and decreased superoxide dismutase activity. It also downregulated the spatiotemporal expression of pituitary development marker genes and liver-specific marker genes. These findings provide evidence of the detrimental effects of diafenthiuron on aquatic organisms and are important for environmental risk assessment.

Bisphenol C induces developmental defects in liver and intestine through mTOR signaling in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Jinfeng Liu et al.

Summary: Bisphenol C (BPC), a common substitute for Bisphenol A (BPA), was found to cause liver and intestinal developmental defects in zebrafish by disrupting the GPER-AKT-mTOR-RPS6 pathway. These results not only revealed the toxicity of BPC during organ development, but also provided insights into the underlying mechanism.

Multi- and Transgenerational Developmental Impairments Are Induced by Decabromodiphenyl Ethane (DBDPE) in Zebrafish Larvae

Yumiao Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, the multi-and transgenerational toxicity of the brominated flame retardant decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) was investigated in zebrafish. The results showed increased malformation and decreased survival rates in unexposed F2 larvae, indicating transgenerational developmental toxicity. Transcriptome and DNA methylome analysis revealed potential disruptions in glycolipid metabolism, mitochondrial energy metabolism, and neurodevelopment. Biochemical indicators confirmed disturbances in energy metabolism, while neurotransmitter contents and light-dark stimulated behavior provided evidence for multi-and transgenerational neurotoxicity in zebrafish.

Mitochondrial Dysfunction Was Involved in Decabromodiphenyl Ethane-Induced Glucolipid Metabolism Disorders and Neurotoxicity in Zebrafish Larvae

Lihua Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the neurotoxicity of DBDPE on zebrafish embryos and found that it caused adverse effects on neurodevelopment, including increased swimming speed, disrupted neurotransmitter contents, and altered transcription of neurodevelopment-related genes. Metabolomics analysis revealed changes in metabolites involved in glycolipid metabolism, oxidative phosphorylation, and oxidative stress. The study also found inhibited mitochondrial oxidative respiration and decreased mitochondrial respiratory chain complex activities, mitochondrial membrane potential, and ATP contents. However, the addition of nicotinamide riboside was able to restore the mitochondrial dysfunction and neurotoxicity induced by DBDPE. This research provides insights into the toxic mechanisms of DBDPE and other emerging pollutants.

Decabromodiphenyl Ethane Mainly Affected the Muscle Contraction and Reproductive Endocrine System in Female Adult Zebrafish

Yumiao Sun et al.

Summary: The novel brominated flame retardant decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) tends to accumulate in the brain of female zebrafish, leading to neurotoxicity and reproductive disruptions. Proteomic analysis showed effects on muscle contraction and estrogen response-related proteins. These findings provide important clues for further research on DBDPE mechanism and risk assessment.

Bis (2-ethylhexyl)-2,3,4,5-tetrabromophthalate showed poor penetrability but increased the permeability of blood brain barrier: Evidences from in vitro and in vivo studies

Sitian Liu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Bis(2-ethylhexyl)-2,3,4,5-tetrabromophthalate (TBPH) has poor penetrability through the blood-brain barrier, but can affect the permeability by possibly influencing the transcription of tight junction proteins genes in zebrafish. TBPH did not affect the neurodevelopment and locomotor activity of zebrafish larvae, but could indirectly impact visual response.

Summary: Organisms exposed to endocrine disruptors during early life may experience altered phenotype in adulthood. This study exposed hatchlings of a self-fertilizing fish to 17-alpha-ethinylestradiol and found long-term effects on hepatic genome-wide methylation, with implications for NIPBL as a regulator. DNA methylation was also found to play a significant role in intergenic regions and potentially in transposable elements.
