Solid-state mechanochemistry advancing two dimensional materials for lithium-ion storage applications: A mini review

Xingang Liu et al.

Summary: The vigorous development of two-dimensional (2D) materials brings about numerous opportunities for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their unique 2D layered structure, large specific surface area, outstanding mechanical and flexibility properties, etc. Modern technologies for production of 2D materials include but are not limited to mechanochemical (solid-state/liquid-phase) exfoliation, the solvothermal method, and chemical vapor deposition. This review highlights strategies for the production of 2D materials via solid-state mechanochemistry, focusing on traditional high energy ball-milling and Sichuan University patented pan-milling. The mechanism involving exfoliation, edge selective carbon radical generation of the 2D materials is delineated, followed by a detailed discussion on representative mechanochemical techniques for tailored and improved lithium-ion storage performance. Given the advantages of the solid-state mechanochemical method, there is great promise for the commercialization of 2D materials for the next-generation high-performance LIBs.

First principles study of field effect device through van der Waals and lateral heterostructures of graphene, phosphorene and graphane

C. Rebolledo Espinoza et al.

Summary: Chemical modification and vertical stacking of two-dimensional materials are studied for new nanoelectronic devices in this research. Density Functional Tight Binding (DFTB) calculations are used to investigate a field-effect device based on lateral and vertical heterostructures of 2D materials. The device consists of a phosphorene channel protected by graphene sheets, which act as contacts and are divided into the source and drain by local hydrogenation. The study explores the influence of electric fields and characterizes electronic transport and doping and defects in the phosphorene channel.

Atomic insights into synergistic effect of pillared graphene by carbon nanotube on the mechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites

Zhipeng Zhou et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations have revealed that the use of pillared graphene or non-covalent connected graphene and CNTs can enhance the mechanical properties of polyethylene nanocomposites. The pillared graphene/PE nanocomposites exhibited higher Young's modulus, tensile strength, and elongation at break compared to non-covalent connected CNTs/graphene/PE nanocomposites. The simulations also showed that pillared graphene can inhibit agglomeration and form a compact effective thickness, leading to improved interfacial energy.
