The recent advances and future perspectives of genetic compensation studies in the zebrafish model

Muhammad Abdul Rouf et al.

Summary: Genetic compensation is the ability of organisms to maintain their fitness and viability in the face of genetic mutation disruptions. The underlying mechanism of genetic compensation is still unresolved, but recent studies in zebrafish have uncovered that it can be triggered by the upregulation of compensating genes and involve collaboration with epigenetic machinery. The study of genetic compensation has potential implications for understanding gene function and developing therapeutic strategies for human genetic disorders.

Myoneurin regulates BMP signaling by competing with Ppm1a for Smad binding

Shuyan Yang et al.

Summary: A zebrafish mutant with disrupted Mynn gene was identified, leading to severe loss of pharyngeal cartilage elements. Further experiments revealed that Mynn interacts with Smad proteins in the nucleus, preventing Smad dephosphorylation. The study provides a new strategy for balancing BMP signal activity.

Riding the crest to get a head: neural crest evolution in vertebrates

Megan L. Martik et al.

Summary: The paper discusses the importance of the neural crest and cranial placodes in vertebrate evolution, as well as recent findings on the gradual evolution of neural crest cells in the course of deuterostome evolution. The results suggest a progressive addition of cell types to the repertoire of neural crest derivatives throughout vertebrate evolution.
