Approaching Practically Accessible and Environmentally Adaptive Sodium Metal Batteries with High Loading Cathodes through In Situ Interlock Interface

Ya-Nan Zhou et al.

Summary: Fast-charging and high-energy-density solid-state sodium metal batteries (SMBs) are urgently needed for state-of-the-art secondary batteries operating under harsh temperatures. However, challenges such as unmatched interfacial contact and temperature limitations in ionic conductivity have hindered the commercialization of SMBs. In this study, researchers addressed these issues by constructing a 3D ion diffusion channel through in situ interlock interfaces. They developed an in situ cured gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) that generated superior 3D ionic conductive networks in the cathodes, allowing for high ionic conductivity at universal temperatures and a wide working potential. The solid-state SMBs with the in situ GPE exhibited excellent long-term cycling stability and superior temperature adaptability.
