An Automated GPR Signal Denoising Scheme Based on Mode Decomposition and Principal Component Analysis

Tong Hao et al.

Summary: This study proposes an automatic mode selection scheme for GPR signal denoising using the combination of improved complete ensemble EMD (ICEEMD) and multiscale principal component analysis (MSPCA). The scheme automatically screens the intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) of GPR B-scan data based on predefined criteria to remove noise. The adaptive ICEEMD decomposes the nonlinear and nonstationary signals into multiple time series, which are then subjected to MSPCA before being reassembled into the final denoised result. Synthetic and real GPR data demonstrate the superiority of this denoising scheme over established techniques like MSPCA and median filtering.

GPR Full-Waveform Inversion With Deep-Learning Forward Modeling: A Case Study From Non-Destructive Testing

Ourania Patsia et al.

Summary: In this study, a near real-time deep-learning forward solver is proposed to generate complete B-scans of ground penetrating radar data, based on certain model parameters as inputs. The solver is tuned for reinforced concrete slab scenarios and can be applied to other applications as well. The accuracy of the deep-learning solver is demonstrated with synthetic and real data, and it is further used in an FWI algorithm to characterize concrete slabs and estimate the depth and radius of buried rebars. The combination of FWI with the ML-based solver significantly reduces execution times compared to conventional numerical solvers.

Background Removal, Velocity Estimation, and Reverse-Time Migration: A Complete GPR Processing Pipeline Based on Machine Learning

Ourania Patsia et al.

Summary: The performance of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is affected by cross coupling between the transmitter and the receiver, as well as the background response. Background clutter suppression and velocity estimation are crucial for effectively locating targets. A novel deep learning scheme combining artificial neural networks (ANNs) and principal component analysis (PCA) was developed, which accurately predicts the background clutter and estimates the background permittivity and conductivity. This scheme outperforms commonly used background removal techniques and conventional migration, making it effective for real complex scenarios.

Inspection and Imaging of Tree Trunk Defects Using GPR Multifrequency Full-Waveform Dual-Parameter Inversion

Deshan Feng et al.

Summary: This article proposes a full-waveform inversion (FWI) approach involving dual-parameter attributes applied to common-offset GPR data from a commercial antenna, which improves the identification accuracy of certain defect types. The effectiveness of the optimized inversion is verified through experiments, demonstrating the robustness and practicability of the proposed algorithm, which can offer more specific and comprehensive guidance for the formulation of tree protection and restoration measures.

A Diversity Framework for Dealing With Multiple Types of Concept Drift Based on Clustering in the Model Space

Chun Wai Chiu et al.

Summary: This study proposes using diversity as a framework to handle multiple types of concept drift and utilizes clustering in the model space to build a diverse ensemble and identify recurring concepts, thereby accelerating the adaptation to new concepts. Experimental results show that the framework usually achieves similar or better predictive accuracy compared to existing approaches in data streams with different types of drift.

Joint Physics and Data Driven Full-Waveform Inversion for Underground Dielectric Targets Imaging

Haoran Sun et al.

Summary: This article proposes a joint physics and data driven full-waveform inversion scheme to better reconstruct underground targets based on ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data. It combines a noniterative physics-based approach with a data driven deep neural network (DNN) to accurately reconstruct target location, shape, and permittivity. The proposed method shows high accuracy, robustness, and noise tolerance in reconstructing underground dielectric targets.

Self-Supervised Time Series Clustering With Model-Based Dynamics

Qianli Ma et al.

Summary: This article introduces a self-supervised time series clustering network framework named STCN, aiming to optimize feature extraction and clustering simultaneously. By using RNN for time series prediction, capturing temporal dynamics and maintaining local structures, the output is then fed into a self-supervised clustering module. Experimental results show that STCN has state-of-the-art performance, and visualization analysis further demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed model.
