The effect of texture under distinct regions of the foot sole on human locomotion

Summary: Sensory feedback from the foot sole plays a significant role in shaping human locomotion. This study used texture in foot orthosis design to manipulate muscle activity and joint kinematics during walking. The results indicate that tactile stimulation has site-specific and gait-phase specific effects on lower leg muscle activity.

Summary: Non-noxious electrical stimulation of distinct locations on the foot sole evokes specific reflex responses in lower limb muscles, which may be mediated via a transcortical pathway. Corticospinal and spinal excitability were measured in participants with and without cutaneous stimulation at different foot sole locations. The results showed that plantarflexors were facilitated with stimulation of the heel, while dorsiflexors were unaffected. The increase in spinal excitability likely explains most of the increase in corticospinal excitability. This study provides evidence for the involvement of a transcortical pathway in cutaneous reflexes from the foot sole.
