Worldwide cases of water pollution by emerging contaminants: a review

Nadia Morin-Crini et al.

Summary: Water contamination by emerging contaminants is increasing due to urbanization, industrialization, and agriculture production. The sources of these contaminants include domestic discharges, hospital effluents, industrial wastewaters, agriculture runoff, and landfill leachates. Conventional wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove these contaminants, and upgrading is necessary.

Use of Copper-Based Fungicides in Organic Agriculture in Twelve European Countries

Lucius Tamm et al.

Summary: The reduction and eventual phasing out of copper-based plant-protection products is a top priority in European policy and organic agriculture. A survey was conducted to provide an overview of the current use of these products in European organic agriculture and the need for alternatives. The survey combined expert knowledge and statistics on pesticide use to estimate the consumption of copper in organic agriculture in 12 European countries. The results showed that approximately 3258 t of copper is consumed per year, which is 52% of the permitted annual dosage. The main crops contributing to this consumption are olives, grapevine, and almonds. More than half of the allowed cases involve farmers using less than half of the permitted amount. Completely abandoning copper fungicides at present would result in significant yield losses. To reduce or avoid copper use, preventive strategies need to be fully implemented, breeding programs intensified, and affordable alternative products brought to the market.

Assessment of heavy metal pollution and exposure risk for migratory birds- A case study of Caohai wetland in Guizhou Plateau (China)

Pinhua Xia et al.

Summary: The study examines heavy metal pollution in the Caohai wetland and assesses the exposure risk in birds, revealing significant variation in contamination levels across different sampling sites. It highlights the differential accumulation of heavy metals in different plant and invertebrate species, and the varying exposure routes for different bird species based on their diets. The study emphasizes the importance of considering exposure from food and soil in assessing heavy metal exposure risk for migratory birds, and offers insights for minimizing contamination in these birds.

A spatial prioritization method for identifying potential eco-risk distributions of heavy metals in soil and birds

Yu-Pin Lin et al.

Summary: Geochemical approaches are used to assess heavy metal concentrations in sediments and soils for eco-risk assessment. The study introduces the SymGeo method to explore heavy metals in topsoils and bird tissues, suggesting a predictive potential risk of heavy metals in birds based on field data. By utilizing FMDM, EF, PRI, Cod, and PRIbird, high ecorisk areas are systematically prioritized with multiple EF, PRI, and Cod results. Findings indicate spatial correlations between heavy metals in feathers, liver, and kidney with topsoil concentrations, emphasizing the importance of incorporating water and sediment samples for enhanced spatial risk assessments.
