Evaluating the integration of body donor imaging into anatomical dissection using augmented reality

Kimberly McBain et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the implementation of augmented reality (AR) in a medical anatomy course, where donor-specific diagnostic imaging was overlaid onto body donors. The findings showed that using Microsoft HoloLens AR head-mounted display improved students' understanding of anatomical relationships and spatial orientation. Students using HoloLens also achieved higher quality grades in trunk dissection.

Interactive teaching enhances students' physiological arousal during online learning

Morris Gellisch et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate whether students' psychobiological stress responses can be enhanced in the context of anatomical online learning and how increased physiological parameters correlate with characteristics of learning experiences in a digital learning environment. The results showed that compared to passive online learning, students engaged in the interaction-enhanced version of online learning displayed a significantly reduced Heart Rate Variability, along with a strong increase in salivary cortisol and salivary alpha-amylase activity. These findings demonstrate that the physiological arousal of students engaged in online learning can be enhanced via interactive teaching methods and highlight the correlation between higher physiological responses and elementary criteria of learning experience such as engagement and attention.

Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality in Plastic and Craniomaxillofacial Surgery: A Scoping Review

Nicolas Kaplan et al.

Summary: Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have been widely used in plastic and craniofacial surgery. This scoping review analyzed articles from 2018 to 2021 and found that VR/AR has been used intraoperatively and preoperatively. The hardware used included HoloLens and smartphones, and most studies utilized an AR platform. The use of VR/AR in surgery has enhanced surgeons' knowledge of patient-specific anatomy and has the potential to decrease intraoperative time.

A Scoping Review of Effective Teaching Strategies in Surface Anatomy

Yasrul Izad Abu Bakar et al.

Summary: This scoping review aimed to identify effective elements and strategies for teaching surface anatomy, and found that contextualized teaching, embracing experiential learning, and learning facilitation were key elements. A multimodal approach was commonly used in surface anatomy instruction, emphasizing the importance of further research on the effectiveness of these teaching strategies in authentic learning environments.

Extended reality anatomy undergraduate teaching: A literature review on an alternative method of learning

Lucy Taylor et al.

Summary: The study found that augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) have high rates of satisfaction and acceptability as supplementary teaching aids for undergraduate students in anatomy education. AR was found to be more effective than VR, but VR is more expensive. Larger and long-term studies are needed to evaluate the true effectiveness and clinical relevance of these technologies.

Teaching gross anatomy during the Covid-19 pandemic: Effects on medical students' gain of knowledge, confidence levels and pandemic- related concerns

Henri Schulte et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of active cadaver dissection and e-learning resources on the learning of anatomy by medical students. The results showed no differences between the two groups in motivation and interest in anatomy, but the non-dissection group had higher concerns about the Covid-19 pandemic. There were no differences in the scores of the knowledge test between the two groups before and after the educational intervention, but after the course, the dissection group demonstrated higher confidence levels and better scores in image-based questions. Students who frequently used online quizzes scored higher in the knowledge test. The study suggests that active dissection should be reintroduced in anatomical curricula in the post-pandemic era.
