A comprehensive comparison of Two-Fluid Model, Discrete Element Method and experiments for the simulation of single- and multiple-spout fluidized beds

Behrad Esgandari et al.

Summary: In this study, a two-fluid model (TFM) and a computational fluid dynamics coupled to discrete element method (CFD-DEM) approach are employed to investigate the hydrodynamics of single and multiple-spout fluidized beds. The simulations are validated against experimental data and the results show good agreement between the TFM and CFD-DEM approaches in terms of volume fraction, solids velocities, solids fluxes, and granular temperature.

Gas jet penetration in gas-solid fluidized and jetting-fluidized beds-A review

Pierre Sauriol et al.

Summary: The high velocity injection of gas in a particulate system leads to the formation of a gas-solid structure characterized by enhanced momentum, mass, and heat transfers. This review focuses on the empirical correlations developed to predict the jet penetration length and half-angle at various operating conditions in different bed configurations in gas-solid fluidized beds. It also discusses the advances in modeling efforts, scale-up issues, and proposes an iterative approach for designing and scaling up injection systems in a gas-solid fluidized bed.

Solid-fluid mixing behavior of conical spouted beds with internal devices

A. Atxutegi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of draft tubes and fountain confiners on the gas and solids mixing behavior in conical spouted beds. The results show that these devices significantly improve the gas residence time and particle cycle time distributions, especially when high inlet gas flow rates are desired.

CFD simulation of the ethylbenzene dehydrogenation reaction in the fixed bed reactor with a cylindrical catalyst of various sizes

Sergei A. Solovev et al.

Summary: In this paper, the Discrete Element Method was utilized to investigate the impact of catalytic granule size on the efficiency of a bed reactor for the ethylbenzene dehydrogenation reaction. The analysis included an evaluation of catalyst total surface area and porosity effects in relation to particle size. Results showed varying reaction product concentration, pressure drops, and reactor productivity for different particle sizes investigated.

Particle shape effect on hydrodynamics and heat transfer in spouted bed: A CFD-DEM study

E. Dianyu et al.

Summary: By investigating the effects of particle shape on hydrodynamics and heat transfer in a spouted bed, this study found that prolate spheroids form the largest bubbles and rise the highest, while oblate spheroids exhibit better heat transfer performance. Compared to spherical particles, ellipsoidal spheroids have better mobility and heat transfer efficiency.

Summary: This study compared the performance of multi-particle correlations and single-particle correlations in predicting particle orientation and velocity in CFD-DEM simulations of elongated particles in a fluidized bed. The results demonstrated that multi-particle correlations improve the accuracy of prediction and highlight the importance of including hydrodynamic torque.

Gas-solid mixing and heat transfer performance in alternating spout deflection

Yuanhe Yue et al.

Summary: In this study, the alternating spout deflection (ASD) is compared with the spout-fluidisation (SF) flow pattern in terms of gas-solid hydrodynamics, mixing, and heat transfer performance using a Computer Fluid Dynamic-Discrete Element Method (CFDDEM) model. The ASD shows advantages in terms of particle packing state, mixing performance, and heat transfer efficiency compared to SF.

Fine particle flow pattern and region delimitation in fountain confined conical spouted beds

Mikel Tellabide et al.

Summary: A novel borescopic technique combined with pressure fluctuation signal monitoring has been used to study solid flow dynamics in confined conical spouted beds. The study reveals characteristics of particle velocity distribution under different configurations and outlines interfaces within the spout-annulus and fountain core-periphery. Among the configurations analyzed, the system without draft tube exhibits the highest vertical particle velocities, showing unique spout expansion patterns compared to literature correlations.

CFD-DEM analysis of the spouted fluidized bed with non-spherical particles

Behrad Esgandari et al.

Summary: The hydrodynamics of spouted fluidized beds containing spherical and sphero-cylindrical particles with an aspect ratio of 4 were studied using the CFD-DEM technique. The simulation results showed differences in bubble properties, solid circulation rate, and particle transition behavior between the two types of particles. The CFD-DEM approach was found to be a promising method for investigating fluid dynamics and particle behaviors in spouted fluidized beds.
