Identification and prediction of fatigue crack growth under different stress ratios using acoustic emission data

Mengyu Chai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the identification and prediction of fatigue crack growth (FCG) in 316LN stainless steel under different stress ratios using the acoustic emission (AE) technique. Multiple AE parameters are extracted from AE waves and used to qualitatively identify fatigue damage and quantitatively predict crack size. The results show that the AE technique accurately identifies the three damage stages associated with crack initiation, stable crack growth, and rapid crack growth. The quantitative relationships between fatigue crack growth rates (FCGRs) and AE parameters are linear in log-log scale and independent of the stress ratio. AE energy is found to be the most superior parameter for qualitatively identifying fatigue damage and relating FCGR to AE data.

Acoustic emission diagnostics of corrosion monitoring in prestressed concrete using hidden Markov and semi-Markov models

Brennan Dubuc et al.

Summary: This article introduces a framework for monitoring corrosion damage in prestressed concrete structures using hidden Markov modeling, comparing the advantages of hidden Markov models and hidden semi-Markov models under typical challenges encountered in real-world monitoring scenarios. Through testing on accelerated corrosion tests, it was found that both types of models are reliable for addressing unknown initial conditions, with the hidden semi-Markov model showing slightly greater reliability against errors in assumed corrosion rates.

Crack-Length Estimation for Structural Health Monitoring Using the High-Frequency Resonances Excited by the Energy Release during Fatigue-Crack Growth

Roshan Joseph et al.

Summary: Acoustic waves are used in structural health monitoring to detect crack lengths by exciting waves released from crack growth. Conventional passive monitoring methods cannot accurately estimate crack length, while the new method uses high-frequency resonances to estimate crack length.

The fundamental ultrasonic edge wave mode: Propagation characteristics and potential for distant damage detection

James M. Hughes et al.

Summary: The paper investigates the fundamental mode of edge waves (ES0) for potential application in distant damage detection. Results show that ES0 mode can be effectively excited with the wedge excitation method at low frequency-thickness values, but at higher values limitations such as wave amplitude modulation, significant energy decay, and strong coupling between modes may restrict defect resolution and range of damage inspections.
