Hydraulic fracturing as unconventional production potential for the organic-rich carbonate reservoir rocks in the Abu El Gharadig Field, north western Desert (Egypt): Evidence from combined organic geochemical, petrophysical and bulk kinetics modeling results

Mohammed Hail Hakimi et al.

Summary: This study systematically analyzes the properties of organic-rich carbonate rocks in the Abu El Gharadig Field using organic geochemistry, petrophysics, and petrography, combined with bulk kinetics modeling. The results show that the Abu Roash (F) carbonate-rich samples have high organic content and good oil generation potential. The presence of hydrogen-rich kerogen and oil generation potential is confirmed by the abundance of fluorescent alginite, amorphous organic matter, and bituminite organic matter. The examined samples are thermally mature and have a high probability of oil production. The Abu Roash (F) organic-rich carbonates have low porosity and poor permeability, with a wide range of pore types controlled by mineralogical brittleness and organic matter inputs. Based on these characteristics, they have the potential to be unconventional tight oil reservoirs requiring hydraulic fracturing.

Paleoenvironmental, paleoclimatic, and organic matter assessment of the hybrid Kharita Formation (Albian) in the Abu Gharadig Basin, Egypt: Integration between palynology, organic petrography, and organic geochemistry

Ahmed Mansour et al.

Summary: During the Early Cretaceous (Albian), there was a global warming and increased environmental perturbations, resulting in the accumulation of organic carbon-rich sediments. In the southern margin of the Tethys Ocean, there were shallow water conditions with some phases of bottom water anoxia. The Kharita Formation in the Abu Gharadig Basin underwent palynological analysis, organic matter characterization, hydrocarbon generation potential assessment, and thermal maturity assessment.

Extraordinarily high organic matter enrichment during the late Guadalupian in northwestern Sichuan basin, China

Qian Pang et al.

Summary: Highly organic-rich shale (EHOMC) formed on the margin of the Sichuan carbonate platform during the late Guadalupian in the eastern Paleo-Tethys. The enrichment of EHOMC was mainly caused by a euxinic-sulfidic environment and high paleo-productivity, especially in Unit 2 with intense upwelling. This enrichment was promoted by factors such as high sea-level, intense upwelling, and biological extinction during the end of Guadeloupe.

Unconventional Petroleum Sedimentology: A Key to Understanding Unconventional Hydrocarbon Accumulation

Caineng Zou et al.

Summary: The commercial exploitation of unconventional petroleum resources has significantly transformed the global energy structure. Sweet-spot intervals, consisting of deposits with high organic matter content or closely associated sandstones/carbonate rocks, are the most productive unconventional hydrocarbon resources. The formation of sweet-spot intervals is controlled by depositional and diagenetic settings influenced by global or regional geological events. Understanding the formation and distribution of sweet-spot intervals is crucial for unconventional petroleum systems.

Sedimentary responses to rifting of the Upper Yangtze Block (Sichuan basin area) in the Middle-Late Permian

L. Deng et al.

Summary: Research indicates that the KL rift valley formed in the Middle Permian and underwent the processes of rifting and post-rift subsidence. During the rifting phase, the northern flank was characterized by carbonate olistostromes while the southern flank deposited bioclastic and reef limestones. The post-rift subsidence phase resulted in deep basin facies enriched with fossils such as Ammonites and the progressive overlapping of lagoon-tidal flat and high-energy shoal facies with deep basin sediments.
