Modeling of solar-assisted ground-coupled heat pumps with or without batteries in remote high north communities

Florian Maranghi et al.

Summary: Many subarctic communities heavily rely on fossil fuels for energy, but solar-assisted ground-coupled heat pumps (SAGCHP) can integrate renewable energy sources. However, it is unclear how such systems would operate in the high North with cold ground, mismatched insolation, and diesel electricity. This paper aims to model a SAGCHP heating a house in Nunavik, Canada to understand its potential and limitations. Simulations were conducted with and without battery storage, revealing complex tradeoffs between four modes of operation. Over ten years, the SAGCHP system reduced fuel consumption by 38.2% (without battery) and 59.1% (with battery).

Renewable Energy as a Catalyst for Equity? Integrating Inuit Interests With Nunavik Energy Planning

Antoine Paquet et al.

Summary: Residents in Nunavik are experiencing significant disruptions due to climate change, leading them to take control of petroleum resources and transition towards renewable energy technologies. However, the appeal of RETs to local residents remains uncertain and there is a need to establish local governance and procedural equity for RETs to become true catalysts for equity.

Building Energy Sovereignty through Community-Based Projects in Nunavik

Thierry Rodon et al.

Summary: This article explores the challenges faced by Inuit communities in Canada reliant on diesel generators for electricity production, and the obstacles in developing renewable energy in Quebec's Inuit territory. Through case studies, the study reveals that the development of alternative energy projects is not only influenced by technical and economic factors, but also by the post-colonial power dynamics between Quebec institutions and the Inuit people.
