Effect of different degrees of adenoid hypertrophy on pediatric upper airway aerodynamics: a computational fluid dynamics study

Zhenzhen Hu et al.

Summary: In order to improve the accuracy of diagnosing adenoid hypertrophy (AH) in children and prevent further complications in a timely manner, it is necessary to study and quantify the effects of different degrees of AH on pediatric upper airway (UA) aerodynamics. Through virtual surgery based on computed tomography (CT) scans, UA models with different degrees of obstruction were constructed to analyze the aerodynamic characteristics in terms of peak velocity, pressure drop, and maximum wall shear stress. The study found that the size of the adenoid plays a crucial role in the patency of the pediatric UA.

Quantitative study of Artemisia pollens deposition in the upper airways of children with adenoidal hypertrophy

Zhenzhen Hu et al.

Summary: There is a lack of studies on the pollen transport and deposition in children nasal airways, especially the regional deposition doses, which hinders the precise application of pollen blockers and nasal administration. In this study, computational fluid particle dynamics modeling was used to analyze the deposition pattern of Artemisia pollen in the upper airway of children with adenoid hypertrophy (AH), and the effects of respiratory flow rate and pollen density on the deposition distribution. The findings suggest notable differences in deposition hotspots and deposition patterns between children and adults, with dry Artemisia pollen posing a higher risk of entering the lower respiratory airways in children.

Nasal airflow comparison in neonates, infant and adult nasal cavities using computational fluid dynamics

John Valerian Corda et al.

Summary: This study uses computational fluid dynamics to compare the nasal anatomy and airflow patterns in neonates, infants, and adults. The results show that the underdeveloped nasal cavity in neonates affects their airflow distribution, with the absence of inferior meatus leading to uneven flow.

Numerical study of the effect of nasopharynx airway obstruction on the transport and deposition of nanoparticies in nasal airways

Summary: This study compared pre- and post-operative nasal airway models and found that nasopharynx obstruction can cause biased flow distribution in the nasal passage. The study also showed improved ventilation and particle deposition in the olfactory region in the post-operative model, suggesting potential for olfactory drug delivery.

Aerodynamic characteristics in upper airways among orthodontic patients and its association with adenoid nasopharyngeal ratios in lateral cephalograms

Xin Feng et al.

Summary: Adenoid hypertrophy in orthodontic patients can be detected in lateral cephalograms. This study compared airflow characteristics in the upper airway using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, based on adenoidal nasopharyngeal (AN) ratios in different subgroups. The results showed that the maximum midsagittal velocity (V-ms) was significantly higher in cases with an AN ratio >= 0.6 compared to those with an AN ratio < 0.6, indicating that V-ms may be a sensitive parameter for assessing airflow features in the upper airway.
