Resilience modeling and pre-hazard mitigation planning of transportation network to support post-earthquake emergency medical response

Yangyang Wu et al.

Summary: Earthquakes can lead to disruptions in traffic networks, power outages, dislocation of trips, and injuries. In order to transport injured individuals to hospitals in a timely manner and avoid congestion, it is crucial to have redundant routes in the transportation network. This study focuses on improving system resilience by integrating emergency response and mitigation planning to support emergency medical response. A new methodology is developed to quantify the resilience of transportation networks, and the feasibility of a resilience-based pre-hazard mitigation strategy is investigated. The proposed framework is demonstrated in Shelby County, Tennessee.

Recovery coupling in multilayer networks

Michael M. Danziger et al.

Summary: The increased complexity of infrastructure systems has resulted in critical interdependencies between multiple networks, where failures in one system can lead to a cascade of failures in other systems. The recovery process of a system often requires resources from other networks, causing documented interdependencies induced by the recovery process. Recovery coupling, capturing the dependence of the recovery of one system on the instantaneous functional state of another system, slows down the recovery process if the supporting networks are not functional.

Predicting road blockage due to building damage following earthquakes

Yun-Chi Yu et al.

Summary: Transportation infrastructure plays a crucial role in supporting communities' social and economic activities. This paper proposes a probabilistic model, calibrated using data from the 2010 Haiti Earthquake, to predict road blockage probability. The model considers factors such as building types, damage level, and road characteristics, and can be applied to urban areas without relying on historical earthquake data.

Seismic fragility of structural and non-structural elements of Nepali RC buildings

Dipendra Gautam et al.

Summary: This study presents seismic fragility functions of reinforced concrete buildings affected by the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake in Nepal. The results show that even buildings constructed after implementation of Nepal Building Code pose significant risk of damage, with beam-column connections being the most fragile structural components. Non-structural components like infill walls and parapet walls are more fragile than structural components, posing safety threat to occupants and disrupting functional use of the buildings.
