New needs to consider during accident analysis: Implications of autonomous vehicles with collision reconfiguration systems

Masoumeh Parseh et al.

Summary: Autonomous vehicles are equipped with collision reconfiguration systems that can improve road traffic safety and reduce accidents. However, the decision-making process of these systems is fundamentally different from other vehicle technologies, requiring specific feedback from accident analyses. This study uses simulations to explore the decision-making strategies of collision reconfiguration systems and their implications on severity. Results show significant differences in the way different strategies affect severity, and highlight the potential effects of algorithm variations. The study proposes new needs for accident analysis, including new safety surrogate measures, recording of near-collision trajectories, and careful documentation of collision configurations.

Autonomous driving testing scenario generation based on in-depth vehicle-to-powered two-wheeler crash data in China

Xinghua Wang et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop autonomous driving testing scenarios for China by analyzing actual crash cases. The researchers identified six functional scenarios and their corresponding logical scenarios based on clustering and distribution analysis of dynamic parameters. They also proposed a virtual crash generation approach to obtain concrete testing scenarios. The results showed that the statistical characteristics of virtual crashes were consistent with those of original crashes. This study provides a theoretical basis and data support for establishing autonomous driving testing schemes tailored to the Chinese traffic environment.
