Evaluation of the effect of thermal oxygen aging on base and SBS-modified bitumen at micro and macroscales

Chao Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the changes and relationship between micro and macro properties of base bitumen and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)-modified bitumen during aging. The results show that aging leads to oxidation of bitumen and degradation of SBS molecules in SBS modified bitumen. The addition of SBS modifier can reduce these changes and improve the aging resistance of modified bitumen. Furthermore, the thermal stability of bitumen improves while the phase transformation heat absorption decreases during aging.

Nanomechanical-atomistic insights on interface interactions in asphalt mixtures with various chloride ion erosion statuses

Zhengwu Long et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interface adhesion behavior of asphalt-silica composites under chloride ion erosion using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results reveal that chloride ion erosion induces structural evolution and the formation of adhesion gradient zones on the asphalt film surface, weakening the interface adhesion between asphalt and aggregate.

Investigation of the Influence of Aging on the Nanoscale Adhesion of Asphalt from the Perspective of AFM-IR-Based Chemical Properties

Mingchen Li et al.

Summary: Investigating the adhesion mechanism during the aging process of the asphalt-aggregate interface from a microscopic point of view is important for solving water damage issues in asphalt pavements. This study used state-of-the-art technologies to analyze the nanoscale adhesion and chemical components of asphalt binders at different aging degrees. The results revealed that both sulfoxide and carbonyl functional group content contribute to the adhesion force of asphalt binders, with sulfoxide content having a more significant effect. A model was also established to estimate the nanoscale adhesion force of asphalt under different aging conditions based on these functional groups.
