Practical scoring system for diagnosis presumptive of acute necrosis of the hepatopancreas (AHPND) in shrimp Penaeus vannamei

Rodolfo Lozano-Olvera et al.

Summary: The evaluation of clinical signs is an important tool in monitoring shrimp health and detecting diseases. This study evaluated the usefulness of a practical scoring system (PSS) for the presumptive detection of AHPND. The study identified useful clinical signs, such as the absence of content in the intestine and stomach, and a discoloured hepatopancreas, to recognize AHPND cases. The PSS was proposed as an in situ detection test in shrimp culture for greater certainty in diagnosing AHPND.

New Insights into the Mechanism of Action of PirAB from Vibrio Parahaemolyticus

Sonia A. Soto-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The PirAB toxins secreted by Vibrio parahaemolyticus (Vp) play a role in causing acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) in Penaeid shrimp. These toxins damage the epithelial cells of the shrimp hepatopancreas (Hp) and the PirB(Vp) subunit has lectin-like activity. Understanding the toxin receptors can help prevent host disease by blocking toxin-receptor interactions. Additionally, Vp AHPND changes the microbiota in the surrounding water, resulting in a reduction of certain bacterial taxa.

Isolation of Harveyi clade Vibrio spp. collected in aquaculture farms: How can the identification issue be addressed?

Antoine Culot et al.

Summary: This study compared the identification methods of Vibrio spp. and found that besides the reference method dDDH, no technique could identify all isolates to the species level. Other tested techniques allowed a faster, cheaper but sub genus clade identification which can be interesting when absolute precision is not required. In this regard, MALDI-ToF and fur based identification seemed especially promising.
