The Mean Inner Potential of Hematite α-Fe2O3 Across the Morin Transition

Avi Auslender et al.

Summary: The mean inner potential (MIP) of hematite, alpha-Fe2O3, was measured using electron holography and transmission electron microscopy. The MIP was found to be sensitive to valence electrons and can be used as a chemical bonding parameter for solids. The study showed that the MIP changes across the Morin magnetic phase transition, indicating a change in ionic bonding due to charge redistribution.

Mean inner potential of graphite measured by electron holography: Probing charge distribution and orbital diamagnetic susceptibility

Avi Auslender et al.

Summary: The research focused on the relationship between the mean-inner-potential (MIP) of anisotropic materials and the mean orbital electron radii and diamagnetic susceptibilities. Analyses of the structure and properties of graphite crystals were conducted through off-axis electron holography experiments, revealing significant anisotropy.

The role of surfaces in flexoelectricity

Christopher A. Mizzi et al.

Summary: In this study, the relationship between the strain derivative of the mean-inner potential and surface contributions to flexoelectricity in finite samples was investigated using density functional theory calculations on SrTiO3, MgO, and Si surfaces. It was found that small differences in surface structure, chemistry, and adsorbates can significantly affect the flexoelectric response. A method to estimate mean-inner potential contributions to flexoelectricity using electron scattering factors was introduced, and predictions of total flexoelectric responses for various insulators were made. Experimental strategies to distinguish between bulk and surface flexoelectric terms were also discussed.
