Epigenetic aging in adult neurogenesis

Sara Zocher et al.

Summary: Neural stem cells in the hippocampus play a crucial role in generating new neurons, which contribute to cognitive flexibility and mood regulation. However, neurogenesis declines significantly with age due to increased quiescence and reduced proliferation of neural stem cells. Epigenetic regulators control the gene expression programs of neural stem cells and are implicated in the age-related decline of adult neurogenesis. Future research should focus on investigating the role of epigenetic dysregulation in neural stem cell aging.

Tetramethylpyrazine promotes stroke recovery by inducing the restoration of neurovascular unit and transformation of A1/A2 reactive astrocytes

Xue-feng Feng et al.

Summary: The active ingredient 2,3,5,6-Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) extracted from the traditional Chinese herbal medicine Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. has been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier and have neuroprotective effects on cerebral ischemia. This research investigated the role of TMP in promoting neurovascular restoration in subacute ischemic stroke and found that TMP improved neurological function, preserved neurovascular unit integrity, and enhanced endogenous neurogenesis and angiogenesis. These effects were potentially mediated by regulating astrocytic reactivity, suppressing excessive AQP4 and Cx43 expression, and activating the FGF2/PI3K/Akt pathway.
