Colony formation of Phaeocystis globosa: A case study of evolutionary strategy for competitive adaptation

Summary: Some algae have a multi-morphic life cycle, appearing as either free-living solitary cells or colonies in algal blooms. Despite the extra energy and resources required for colony formation, many algae tend to outbreak in the form of colonies. This study investigated different sizes of colonies and solitary cells in a natural bloom of Phaeocystis globosa and found that colonies have a competitive advantage due to lower oxidant stress, nutrient trap effect, and higher nutrient use efficiency. These features suggest that colony formation is an evolutionary strategy for competitive adaptation.

Constraints on the spatial variations of soil carbon fractions in a mangrove forest in Southeast China

Summary: Mangroves have a disproportionate amount of blue carbon stored in their deep soil, accounting for 74% of the total. The global carbon stock estimate of mangroves is equivalent to 15-24% of that in the tropical coastal ocean. They play an important role in carbon sequestration, with carbon burial in their soils averaging 184g/m2/year. Extreme weather events, increasing temperatures, and changes in rainfall can negatively impact carbon stocks and cycling. Forest responses to sea-level rise and rising CO2 are complex and species-specific.

The soil microbiome regulates these services, and understanding its assembly patterns is crucial to comprehend how environmental changes impact this ecosystem. This study used high-throughput amplicon sequencing to investigate microbial community assembly in arid Avicennia marina forests at different spatial scales. The results showed that the composition of the bacterial community varied more along an intertidal gradient than between different geographic regions. However, the structure of the bacterial community differed primarily between geographic regions. These findings highlight the importance of local environmental factors and the disconnect between community composition and structure in mangrove soil microbial assemblages.
