Eighteen Novel Bioactive Peptides from Monkfish (Lophius litulon) Swim Bladders: Production, Identification, Antioxidant Activity, and Stability

Yan Sheng et al.

Summary: Papain was chosen to hydrolyze proteins of monkfish swim bladders, and the hydrolysis conditions were optimized. Eighteen peptides were purified and identified from the swim bladder hydrolysate, and some of them showed significant antioxidant activities. The peptides had high stability under different conditions. The prepared antioxidant peptides could be applied in health-promoting products.

Effect of Extraction Time on the Extractability and Physicochemical Properties of Pepsin-Soluble Collagen (PCS) from the Skin of Silver Catfish (Pangasius sp.)

Mannur Ismail Shaik et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of extraction time on collagen extraction from silver catfish skin. Pepsin soluble collagen (PSC) was extracted for 24 and 48 hours and evaluated for its chemical composition, solubility, functional group, microstructure, and rheological properties. The results showed that 24-hour extraction yielded PSC with better chemical composition and similar extractability compared to the 48-hour extraction. Therefore, 24 hours was determined as the optimal extraction time for PSC from silver catfish skin.

Structural and functional properties of collagen isolated from lumpfish and starfish using isoelectric precipitation vs salting out

Naveen Kumar Vate et al.

Summary: This study investigated the possibility of replacing the time and resource demanding salting out (SO) method with isoelectric precipitation (IP) for collagen extraction from common starfish and lumpfish. The results showed that IP achieved a higher or similar collagen mass yield compared with SO, but with lower purity. However, IP did not affect the polypeptide pattern, structural integrity, thermal stability, and fibril formation capacity of collagen from these resources. Therefore, it can be considered as a promising resource smart alternative for collagen extraction from marine resources.

Novel Antioxidant Collagen Peptides of Siberian Sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) Cartilages: The Preparation, Characterization, and Cytoprotection of H2O2-Damaged Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs)

Yan Sheng et al.

Summary: By processing Siberian sturgeon cartilages, collagen hydrolysate (SCH) with antioxidant activity was obtained, and thirteen antioxidant peptides were isolated from it. Among them, GEYGFE, PSVSLT, and IELFPGLP exhibited the highest scavenging activity and protective effects on cells. These findings provide theoretical support for the development of high-value Siberian sturgeon cartilage products and the treatment of chronic diseases.

Gelatins and antioxidant peptides from Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) skins: Purification, characterization, and cytoprotection on ultraviolet-A injured human skin fibroblasts

Shuang-Yi Zhang et al.

Summary: Gelatins (STG) were extracted from skipjack tuna skins using acid, enzyme, and hot water methods. Acid extracted gelatin (STG-A) showed the highest transparency and gel strength. STG-AH, a neutrase hydrolysate of STG-A, exhibited the highest antioxidant activity and could protect human skin fibroblasts against UVA injury. Furthermore, nineteen peptides with high antioxidant activity were identified from STG-AH.

M. Shaik et al.

Summary: The study aimed to extract acid-soluble collagen from the skin of the sharpnose stingray using organic and inorganic acid via an ultrasound-assisted method. It was found that the yield and properties of collagen extracted using acetic acid were significantly higher than those extracted using hydrochloric acid.

Extractability and physicochemical properties of cobia (Rachycentron canadum) skin collagen as influenced by lactic acid concentration

Norzulaiha Sukeri et al.

Summary: The present research investigated the effect of lactic acid concentration on the extractability and physicochemical properties of cobia skin collagen. Results showed that using 0.5 M lactic acid for extraction yielded higher content of moisture, protein, fat, and ash compared to using 1.0 M lactic acid. Both extracts exhibited decreasing relative viscosity with temperature increase. This study suggests that collagen production from cobia skin can be optimized by utilizing lactic acid at different concentrations, resulting in collagen with potential multi-applications.

Comparative Study of The Yield and Physicochemical Properties of Collagen from Sea Cucumber (Holothuria scabra), Obtained through Dialysis and the Ultrafiltration Membrane

Suryani Saallah et al.

Summary: Collagen was extracted from sea cucumber body wall using pepsin-solubilized collagen method and isolated using dialysis and ultrafiltration membrane. The study compared the yield and physicochemical properties of collagens obtained from both methods, showing that ultrafiltration method resulted in higher yield and comparable properties to commercial collagen.
