Bovine colostrum as a fortifier to human milk in very preterm infants-A randomized controlled trial (FortiColos)

Agnethe May Ahnfeldt et al.

Summary: Investigating the use of intact bovine colostrum as a fortifier for human milk in very preterm infants, it was found that it is feasible, safe, and showed preliminary efficacy in terms of growth and blood biochemistry. The fortification with bovine colostrum resulted in similar growth but provided more protein and elevated amino acid levels compared to conventional fortifiers.

The bioactivity of colostrum and milk exosomes of high, average, and low immune responder cows on human intestinal epithelial cells

Mikayla Ross et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the functional role of bovine milk exosomes compared with colostrum exosomes from high, average, and low immune responders using Caco-2 cells. The results showed that milk exosomes maintain cell metabolic activity and are not cytotoxic, with significantly greater metabolic activity observed with exosomes from high responder cows. Additionally, milk exosomes were found to have lower caspase 3 activity compared to colostrum exosomes, particularly those from low responders.

Bovine Colostrum: Its Constituents and Uses

Summary: Colostrum is the milk produced in the first few days after birth, containing high levels of immunoglobulins, antimicrobial peptides, and growth factors that are important for supporting growth, development, and immunologic defense. Numerous studies have shown therapeutic benefits of bovine colostrum for maintaining wellbeing, treating medical conditions, and in animal husbandry.

Potential Benefits of Bovine Colostrum in Pediatric Nutrition and Health

Per Torp Sangild et al.

Summary: Bovine colostrum (BC) is a nutritional supplement that may improve gut function and health in infants and children, especially when immune and gut functions are immature in early life. Studies suggest that BC supplementation should be provided at optimal age, time, and level to be safe and effective, and may reduce complications related to preterm birth, infections, and gut disorders. Additional clinical trials are needed to provide more evidence of the health benefits of BC supplementation in pediatric populations.
