Ages of the Ediacaran Volyn-Brest trap volcanism, glaciations, paleosols, Podillya Ediacaran soft-bodied organisms, and the Redkino-Kotlin boundary (East European Craton) constrained by zircon single grain U-Pb dating

Jan Srodon et al.

Summary: Combined single zircon crystal CA-ID-TIMS U-Pb dating, micropaleontological study, and quantitative XRD analysis were used to correlate sections of the Podillya-Moldova Ediacaran succession with sections of the Volyn Large Igneous Province (Volyn LIP). The Volyn LIP activity had two phases: a first phase of mafic and felsic magmatism lasting from c.580 to 567 Ma, and a second phase of pyroclastic felsic magmatism lasting from 567 to c.545 Ma. The Podillya Ediacaran succession corresponds to the felsic phase of the Volyn LIP.

A Great late Ediacaran ice age

Ruimin Wang et al.

Summary: A Great Ediacaran Glaciation, lasting for 20 million years, occurred globally from mid-to-high latitudes, witnessing the evolution of the Ediacara biota. The timing of Ediacaran glaciation remains controversial due to limited age constraints and a lack of convincing evidence for low-latitude glaciations. However, recent studies using carbon isotope excursions and paleomagnetic evidence suggest that the Ediacaran glaciation occurred diachronously but continuously from ca. 580-560 Ma as different continents migrated through polar-temperate latitudes.

An Upper Ediacaran Glacial Period in Cadomia: the Granville tillite (Armorican Massif) - sedimentology, geochronology and provenance

Ulf Linnemann et al.

Summary: Recent studies in the Armorican Massif of Normandy, France, have described glacigenic sedimentary deposits from the late Ediacaran period. Combined with data from other regions, it appears that these deposits represent an Upper Ediacaran Glacial Period in northern peri-Gondwana.

Sedimentological, geochemical, and geochronological constraints on the origin of the Neoproterozoic Luoquan Formation at the Southern Margin of the North China Craton

Biyun Zhang et al.

Summary: During the Neoproterozoic, global climate changed dramatically, leading to the discovery of glacial deposits worldwide. This study focused on investigating the Neoproterozoic Luoquan Formation in the southern margin of the North China Craton, revealing evidence of glacial meltwater deposits eroding nearby strata in a gradually warming environment. Sedimentary characteristics, glacial relics, changes in geochemical values, and the provenance age of detrital zircons all support the conclusion that the NCC deposition process occurred in the late Neoproterozoic with glacier migration from north to south.

G. J. Retallack

Summary: The paper reviews glacial advances during the Ediacaran period and highlights the importance of paleosols and chemical weathering in understanding sea-level changes and paleoclimates. It also discusses the significance of ice wedge paleosols in Boston Bay and the correlation methods using paleosols and chemical indices.

Oldhamia radiata: the trace of an undermat miner from the Cambrian Series 2 Xinji Formation, western Henan, North China

Ming-Yue Dai et al.

Summary: Oldhamia radiata is a complex horizontal burrow system associated with microbial mats that existed during the upper part of the Cambrian period and disappeared rapidly later on. This study reports the discovery of Oldhamia radiata in the Xinji Formation of western Henan, China, during the Cambrian period, providing evidence of its association with microbial mats.

Detrital zircon geochronology and stratigraphy of the Proterozoic strata in the Olongbuluke terrane of Northwest China: Implications for the Great Unconformity

Yunpeng Sun et al.

Summary: This study conducts detrital zircon U-Pb analyses on samples from the Olongbuluke terrane in Northwest China, revealing important geological features and ages of the region. The results show the presence of multiple unconformities in the Olongbuluke terrane, similar to those in the North China craton, suggesting lengthy denudations resulting from multiple tectonic activities in these regions.

Biostratigraphic constraints on the age of Neoproterozoic glaciation in North China

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: Neoproterozoic glacial deposits are important stratigraphic markers providing insights into extreme climates. The discovery of the late Ediacaran index fossil Shaanxilithes in the Dongpo Formation along the southwestern margin of the North China Craton suggests a late Ediacaran age for the formation. The underlying glacial deposits of the Luoquan Formation are constrained to pre-Shaanxilithes in age and the tectonic affinity of Precambrian tectonic units is re-evaluated.

Revisiting the Nantuo Formation in Shennongjia, South China: A new depositional model and multiple glacial cycles in the Cryogenian

Xiaoshuai Chen et al.

Summary: Sedimentary logging of the Nantuo Formation in the Shennongjia area revealed four different facies, which allowed for the determination of ice advance-retreat cycles in the region. The study identified three glacial advance systems tracts and retreat systems tracts, as well as proposed a transitional type of glacier between temperate and polythermal based on sedimentology analysis.

Summary: Shaanxilithes is a potential index fossil of the late Ediacaran period due to its widespread distribution and narrow stratigraphic range. Its actual morphology and taxonomic classification have long been controversial, with varied interpretations of its biological affinities. New research has revealed Shaanxilithes to be classified as a cloudinid based on anatomical details.
