Assessment of 24 soil moisture datasets using a new in situ network in the Shandian River Basin of China

Jingyao Zheng et al.

Summary: This study evaluated different soil moisture datasets using a new wireless sensor network and found that the latest Climate Change Initiative combined product had the best agreement with in situ measurements. Factors such as local acquisition time, physical surface temperature, and vegetation optical depth were also found to impact the accuracy of soil moisture products.

The reliability of categorical triple collocation for evaluating soil freeze/thaw datasets

Heng Li et al.

Summary: Seasonal soil freeze/thaw state transition plays a critical role in various processes, and it is important to validate the accuracy of freeze/thaw products. Previous validation studies have used categorical triple collocation (CTC) as a method, but quantitative evaluation of the classification accuracy is needed. In this study, we compared the CTC estimated performance rankings and classification accuracies with actual observations. The results show that the CTC estimated classification accuracies are strongly correlated with dense ground observations, but have significant errors when using sparse surface temperatures. This study improves our understanding of the reliability of the CTC method.

A first assessment of satellite and reanalysis estimates of surface and root-zone soil moisture over the permafrost region of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Zanpin Xing et al.

Summary: Long-term and high-quality surface soil moisture (SSM) and root-zone soil moisture (RZSM) data are crucial for understanding the land-atmosphere interactions of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). This study evaluated a range of satellite and reanalysis estimates of SSM and RZSM in the thawed soil overlaying permafrost in the QTP, showing that ESA CCI, SMAP-L4, and SMOS-IC SSM products outperformed others, while SMAP-L4 and GLDAS-Noah RZSM products performed better than ERAS-Land.

Sentinel-1 soil moisture at 1 km resolution: a validation study

Anna Balenzano et al.

Summary: This study evaluates a pre-operational soil moisture product at 1 km resolution derived from Sentinel-1 radar satellite data. The retrieval algorithm relies on short term change detection using SAR imaging. Results show that for dense hydrological networks, the RMSE and correlation are around 0.06 m(3)/m(3) and 0.71, respectively, while in sparse networks, the RMSE increases by approximately 0.02 m(3)/m(3) (70% Confidence Level). Globally, the S-1 Theta product has an intrinsic RMSE of about 0.07 m(3)/m(3) and a correlation of 0.54.

Summary: This study evaluated the temporal dynamics of 18 state-of-the-art soil moisture products, finding that the use of the Soil Wetness Index smoothing filter improved performance for all satellite products. Among the single-sensor satellite products, the L-band-based SMAPL3ESWI performed the best; among the open-loop models, HBV-MSWEP showed the best performance; and among the models with satellite data assimilation, HBV-MSWEP+SMAPL3E performed the best.
