Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Impact of Delirium on Hospitalized Older Adults With Dementia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Qin Yun Claudia Han et al.

Summary: DSD has a high prevalence in hospitalized older adults and can have negative impacts on patients, such as worse cognitive and functional outcomes, increased risk of institutionalization and mortality, highlighting the need for early identification and treatment. Further research on risk factors of DSD is necessary to improve understanding of this common but underrecognized phenomenon.

Disproportionate Impact of COVID-19 on Racial and Ethnic Minority Groups in the United States: a 2021 Update

Don Bambino Geno Tai et al.

Summary: The disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on certain racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. has persisted in 2021, with Black, Latinx, and American Indian individuals experiencing higher hospitalization and mortality rates compared to White individuals. The pandemic has likely exacerbated disparities in wealth, employment, housing, and healthcare access, while also widening achievement gaps between Black and Latinx students and White students due to school closures. Vaccine hesitancy rates among Black and Latinx individuals have decreased and are now comparable to White individuals.

Effects of non-pharmacological interventions for preventing delirium in general ward inpatients: A systematic review & meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Yun Hee Kim et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify different types and contents of non-pharmacological delirium prevention interventions for inpatients in general wards, and to evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions in reducing the incidence of delirium. The findings showed that multi-component interventions were effective in reducing the occurrence of delirium in both internal medicine and surgical wards.

Summary: This study reviews the current evidence on direct healthcare costs and health-related quality of life associated with delirium. The findings suggest that delirium leads to increased hospital costs, but its impact on HRQOL is not well demonstrated.

The COVID-19 conundrum: Where both the virus and treatment contribute to delirium

Brittany Woolley

Summary: Hospitalists and intensivists may be focused on treating the life-threatening respiratory conditions of COVID-19, but the prevention, identification, and treatment of delirium are equally important for identifying at-risk patients. COVID delirium can be challenging to manage due to treatment methods and medications that may not be effective for this population, requiring new treatment techniques to be developed by neurology and psychiatry practitioners.

Implementation of a multicomponent intervention sign to reduce delirium in orthopaedic inpatients (MIND-ORIENT): a quality improvement project

Christina Reppas-Rindlisbacher et al.

Summary: Delirium is a common and serious condition among hospitalized older adults, with the potential for significant adverse health outcomes. Non-pharmacological interventions have been shown to reduce delirium incidence, but implementation challenges exist. This project successfully implemented a bedside sign in an orthopaedic unit to prompt staff to use evidence-based delirium prevention strategies, although it did not have a significant impact on delirium prevalence. Staff reported positive feedback on the sign as a useful tool for promoting non-pharmacological interventions in routine clinical care.
