Structure-function analyses of coiled-coil immune receptors define a hydrophobic module for improving plant virus resistance

Xiujuan Wu et al.

Summary: Plant immunity relies on NOD-like receptors (NLRs) to detect microbial patterns and activate localized cell death against pathogens. Tsw is a resistance gene in pepper that confers resistance to tomato spotted wilt orthotospovirus (TSWV), but its molecular and cellular mechanisms are still unclear. This study analyzed the structure and function of Tsw protein and identified a hydrophobic module that enhances virus resistance.

Whole genome resequencing identifies candidate genes and allelic diagnostic markers for resistance to Ralstonia solanacearum infection in cultivated peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.)

Chong Zhang et al.

Summary: QTL-seq was used to identify a candidate genomic region associated with resistance to Ralstonia solanacearum, which contained 180 nonsynonymous SNPs and 14 InDels affecting 75 and 11 putative candidate genes, respectively. Two diagnostic SNP markers were validated and showed high phenotypic variation in resistant and susceptible lines.

Hierarchical regulatory module GENOMES UNCOUPLED1-GOLDEN2-LIKE1/2-WRKY18/40 modulates salicylic acid signaling

Keun Pyo Lee et al.

Summary: The GENOMES UNCOUPLED1 (GUN1)-mediated chloroplast-to-nucleus retrograde signaling pathway modulates salicylic acid (SA) signaling in Arabidopsis. GUN1 represses the transcription of GLK1/2, which positively regulate chloroplast biogenesis. Knockout of GLK1/2 leads to enhanced stress responses through the upregulation of SA-responsive genes.

Advances in omics research on peanut response to biotic stresses

Ruihua Huang et al.

Summary: High-throughput Omics approaches have been used to study the response and tolerance mechanism of peanut to biotic and abiotic stresses. Integrating functional genomics with other Omics technologies helps to understand the relationship between peanut genomes and phenotypes under specific stress conditions. This review focuses on biotic stresses in peanut and discusses the types of stresses, multi-Omics technologies, recent advances, and future directions for sustainable food production.

Evaluation of Wild Peanut Species and Their Allotetraploids for Resistance against Thrips and Thrips-Transmitted Tomato Spotted Wilt Orthotospovirus (TSWV)

Yi-Ju Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the resistance of wild diploid Arachis species and peanut-compatible-induced allotetraploids against TSWV and thrips through thrips-mediated transmission assays and feeding assays. Among the evaluated genotypes, certain diploids and tetraploid hybrids exhibited reduced TSWV infection, virus accumulation, and thrips feeding damage.

Integrative analysis of the transcriptome and metabolome reveals the response mechanism to tomato spotted wilt virus

Junheng Lv et al.

Summary: In this study, genes and metabolites related to TSWV resistance in tomato plants were identified and studied using transcriptomic and metabolomic techniques. The results revealed that these genes and metabolites are mainly involved in plant hormone signal transduction and flavonoid synthesis pathways. Nucleotide-binding site-leucine-rich repeat genes and transcription factors were also found to potentially be involved in the response to TSWV.

Tomato zonate spot virus induced hypersensitive resistance via an auxin-related pathway in pepper

Lihua Zhao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the basic defense responses of peppers against Tomato zonate spotvirus (TZSV), finding that certain genes may be involved in mediating hypersensitive resistance. This research lays the groundwork for further exploration of the pathogenic mechanism of TZSV and the mechanism of resistance to TZSV in peppers.

Analysis of the miRNA expression profile involved in the tomato spotted wilt orthotospovirus-pepper interaction

Hongzheng Tao et al.

Summary: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) that are regulated by TSWV infection in peppers were identified using high-throughput sequencing technology and their functions and target genes were analyzed. The study found 101 differentially expressed miRNAs in TSWV-infected peppers and several of these miRNAs were validated. The function of these miRNAs and their target genes were predicted through functional and pathway enrichment analysis, revealing their regulatory role in plant-pathogen interactions and plant hormone signal transduction. These findings provide insights into the mechanism of TSWV-host interactions.

DNA methylation dynamics in response to abiotic and pathogen stress in plants

Heena Arora et al.

Summary: DNA methylation is an important epigenetic mechanism that regulates gene expression and chromatin stability. Differential DNA methylation plays a crucial role in selective expression of defense-related genes during environmental stress and pathogen attack. High throughput sequencing has allowed for the detection of genome-wide methylation status and can aid in plant breeding.

Pin-Chu Lai et al.

Summary: Investigating population genetics of Thrips-transmitted tomato spotted wilt orthotospovirus (TSWV) isolates collected from peanut cultivars with varying levels of TSWV resistance revealed no evidence of resistance exerting selection pressure on TSWV. Despite differences in susceptibility to thrips among evaluated cultivars, no significant impact of resistance on TSWV was found.
