Effect of Concentration, Chain Length, Hydrophobicity, and an External Electric Field on the Growth of Mixed Alkanethiol Self-Assembled Monolayers: A Molecular Dynamics Study

Pratiti Bhadra et al.

Summary: The study focuses on cultivating functionalized self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with fewer defects and lower cost. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate SAM formation on a gold substrate from mixed alkanethiolates in an ethanol solution. Results showed that the surface coverage of SAM is dependent on ligand concentration, and reducing chain length and increasing proportions of hydrophobic diluting molecules can improve coverage. However, changing the composition of ligands may not be desirable for SAM's functional requirements.

Electron-Irradiation Promoted Exchange Reaction as a Tool for Surface Engineering and Chemical Lithography

Andreas Terfort et al.

Summary: This review introduces a novel irradiation-promoted exchange reaction approach for aliphatic SAMs, overcoming the limitations of extensive irradiation-induced damage and allowing for selective modification of specific chemical groups. The key idea is to control the exchange reaction between a primary aliphatic SAM and a potential molecular substituent by electron irradiation, leading to the preparation of a large variety of binary SAMs with controlled compositions for complex chemical patterning with low irradiation doses and flexible choice of SAM-forming molecules.

Human versus Bovine Serum Albumin: A Subtle Difference in Hydrophobicity Leads to Large Differences in Bulk and Interface Behavior

Ralph Maier et al.

Summary: This study compared the phase behavior of human serum albumin (HSA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) in the presence of trivalent cations. It was found that HSA has stronger intermolecular attraction at the same compositions, leading to easier crystallization. Additionally, the higher surface hydrophobicity of HSA promotes directional and specific protein-protein contacts essential for protein crystallization.
