Gum Arabic-Stabilized Ferric Oxyhydroxide Nanoparticles for Efficient and Targeted Intestinal Delivery of Bioavailable Iron

Shiyang Li et al.

Summary: Nanostructured iron(III) compounds with desirable iron bioavailability and food compatibility were developed as promising food fortificants. Gum arabic (GA) solubilized 252 mg/g of iron(III) at neutral pH, forming GA-stabilized ferric oxyhydroxide nanoparticles (GA-FeONPs) with Z-average size of 142.7 +/- 5.9 nm and zeta-potential of -20.50 +/- 1.25 mV. GA-FeONPs exhibited efficient internalization and endocytosis by Caco-2 cells, leading to desirable iron bioavailability and sustained iron release. The colloidal stability of GA-FeONPs was maintained under various conditions, and they showed weaker pro-oxidant activity compared to FeSO4. Oral pharmacokinetics demonstrated the superior iron bioavailability of GA-FeONPs relative to FeSO4. Overall, GA-FeONPs are a promising iron fortificant with food-compatible, efficient, and targeted delivery properties.

Flow synthesis of intrinsically radiolabeled and renal-clearable ultrasmall [Au-198]Au nanoparticles in a PTFE microchannel

Rubel Chakravarty et al.

Summary: A method for synthesizing ultrasmall, citrate-functionalized, and intrinsically radiolabeled [Au-198]Au nanoparticles in a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) microreactor is reported. The synthesized nanoparticles showed excellent radiochemical stability and fast clearance through the renal route in biodistribution studies. This strategy has the potential to lay the foundation for the development of renal-clearable inorganic radionanomedicines with minimized toxicity for clinical translation.

One pot synthesis of zwitteronic 99mTc doped ultrasmall iron oxide nanoparticles for SPECT/T1-weighted MR dual-modality tumor imaging

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: Successful synthesis of Tc-99m doped USIONPs with excellent water solubility and favorable T1 signal was achieved by controlling the radioactivity and reducing agent amount. The zwitterionic surface coating helps resist protein corona formation, resulting in reduced RES uptake and higher tumor contrast. Tc-99m-ZW-USIONPs showed promising tumor SPECT and T1-weighted MR imaging capabilities in 4T1 tumor bearing mice.

On the wrong assignment of the XPS O1s signal at 531-532 eV attributed to oxygen vacancies in photo- and electro-catalysts for water splitting and other materials applications

Hicham Idriss

Summary: The XPS O1s signal mistakenly attributed to oxygen vacancies is actually due to the adsorption of water molecules on the oxide surface under ambient conditions. Surface oxygen vacancies in binary or mixed metal oxide materials or catalysts will be oxidized instantly due to the strong adsorption energy of water, making it impossible for ex-situ measurements.
