Can a course on aging with a service-learning component change students' attitudes toward aging?

Summary: Ageism can have negative impacts on various aspects of society, including interactions with older adults, social policies, healthcare practices, and the outcomes of aging. This study explores the effectiveness of a psychology course on aging that includes a service-learning component in reducing ageism among undergraduate students. Results showed a significant reduction in ageism as measured by the Fraboni Scale of Ageism, indicating that teaching aging along with intergenerational interaction can effectively change attitudes towards aging among young adults.

Getting AHeAD: Examining the Intergenerational Benefits of Participating in a College Service-Learning Program

Summary: This study examined the impact of an intergenerational service-learning program on changing student attitudes towards older adults and found significant positive effects on student attitudes, reducing negative stereotypes and increasing understanding and empathy. Implicit measures of teachers' attitudes and stereotypes, and their effects on teacher practice and student outcomes: A review

Summary: This paper reviews the research on implicitly measured teacher associations with social groups of students and discusses the theoretical and methodological foundations of using implicit measures in educational research. It summarizes the completed research that has used implicit measures, explores the relationship between implicitly measured attitudes and stereotypes and different teacher factors and student outcomes, and suggests challenges and directions for future research on implicit measures and their effects. A total of 49 studies were reviewed, indicating that the use of implicit measures has great potential for understanding how teachers treat students differently, but further development and validation of implicit measures in experimental and field settings are needed.

The additive impact of multiple psychosocial protective factors on selected health outcomes among older adults

Summary: The study found that the five psychosocial protective factors (purpose-in life, resilience, optimism, internal locus of control, and social connections) have a positive impact on the psychological and physical health of older adults. As the number of these protective factors increases, health outcomes improve, with the greatest improvement observed between 0 and 1 factor. Additionally, there is a significant linear trend of reduced healthcare expenditures with an increase in protective factors.

Diversity and age stereotypes in portrayals of older adults in popular American primetime television series

Summary: The study found that older adult characters are still under-represented on primetime television, and they are often depicted as young-old, male, Caucasian, middle-class, able-bodied, and straight. Older women face double discrimination in media representations, while older characters of ethnicities other than Caucasian and African American are virtually invisible. In addition, old-old characters, sexual minorities, and persons with disabilities are rare among older adult characters in this type of programming.
