Imaging of pH distribution inside individual microdroplet by stimulated Raman microscopy

Kedong Gong et al.

Summary: This study used stimulated Raman scattering microscopy to visualize the three-dimensional pH distribution inside microdroplets of varying sizes. It found that the surface of all microdroplets is more acidic, and observed a decreasing pH trend from center to edge in small aerosol microdroplets. However, pH distribution differed in larger cloud microdroplets.

Spatial homogeneity of pH in aerosol microdroplets

Meng Li et al.

Summary: Acidity is crucial for atmospheric aerosol formation and its impacts on air quality, climate, and the ecosystem. This study directly measures the pH distribution in NaH2PO4-Na2HPO4 microdroplets and finds that the pH values of the microdroplets are similar to the parent bulk solutions and remain constant across the microdroplets. Similar results are observed for acidic NaHSO4 microdroplets.

Molecular Mechanism of Autodissociation in Liquid Water: Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Tatsuya Joutsuka

Summary: In this study, AIMD simulations were used to investigate the PMF profiles of autoionization in liquid water. The results showed that there were no local minima in the product state of proton transfer along the PT coordinate, but there were local minima and reaction barriers along the PT coordinate and donor-acceptor distance. These findings indicate the importance of both the PT coordinate and donor-acceptor distance in accurately calculating the acid dissociation constant.

Acidity across the interface from the ocean surface to sea spray aerosol

Kyle J. Angle et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates that freshly emitted sea spray aerosols have significantly lower pH values than seawater, with smaller aerosol particles having even lower pH values. Aerosol acidity is found to be correlated with dissolved carbon dioxide but not with marine biology within seawater. The study discusses the mechanisms and implications of this acidity on atmospheric chemistry.

Machine Learning Force Fields

Oliver T. Unke et al.

Summary: The use of machine learning in computational chemistry has led to significant advancements, particularly in the development of machine learning-based force fields to bridge the gap between accuracy and efficiency. The key concept is to learn the statistical relations between chemical structure and potential energy, without preconceived notions of fixed bonds. Challenges remain for the next generation of machine learning force fields.

Daniel Munoz-Santiburcio et al.

Summary: This Focus Review discusses recent insights into wet chemistry under extreme molecular confinement conditions, focusing on the effects of nanoconfinement on hydrogen bonding, ion diffusion, and charge defect migration in water. Special attention is paid to the localized dielectric properties and their potential impact on chemical reactions within highly confined water films.
