Implementation of shear-locking-free triangular refined zigzag element for structural analysis of multilayered plates with curvilinear fibers

P. Zoghipour et al.

Summary: In this study, a single-layer model based on the refined zigzag theory (RZT) is proposed to model variable stiffness composite laminates with curvilinear fiber reinforcement, which significantly reduces the computational cost while maintaining numerical accuracy. A three-node triangle RZT element formulation is adopted to accurately simulate the static analysis of multilayer composites and sandwich plates. The derivatives of the zigzag functions with respect to planar coordinates are considered to accurately model the strains in the variable stiffness composite laminate.

Multiscale structural analysis of thick sandwich structures using parametric HFGMC micromechanics and isogeometric plate formulation based on refined zigzag theory

Aryan Kheyabani et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel multiscale modeling strategy that combines the high fidelity generalized method of cells micromechanical model and isogeometric analysis based on refined zigzag theory for thick sandwich structures. The approach eliminates the need for time-consuming experiments by defining the effective behavior of sandwich face sheets using constituent properties. The proposed method utilizes the RZT kinematics to accurately model a thick laminate or a sandwich structure as a single layer, and the IGA technique to effectively discretize the geometry of the structure.

K. A. Hasim et al.

Summary: This study presents an isogeometric layerwise element, L-IGA, based on the principle of virtual displacement theory to model the bending behavior of laminated smart composite plates integrated with piezoelectric layers. L-IGA utilizes high-order NURBS functions for geometry and kinematic variables discretization, ensuring exact geometry and highly accurate solutions.

Dynamic strength, reinforcing mechanism and damage of ceramic metal composites

Kuixin Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the dislocation motion and interaction under shock loading of SiC/Al nanocomposites. The results showed that the Al/SiC interfaces can act as a dislocation emitter, controlling the density and direction of dislocation multiplication to achieve ultrahigh strength. The effect of nanoparticles on dislocation structure changes when the impact velocity exceeds a certain limit. Furthermore, the study revealed the abnormal shock softening effect determined by atomic velocity.

Isogeometric static analysis of laminated plates with curvilinear fibers based on Refined Zigzag Theory

K. A. Hasim et al.

Summary: A new IsoGeometric formulation (IG-RZT) based on Refined Zigzag Theory has been proposed for static analysis of laminated plates with curvilinear fiber paths. This method accurately predicts in-plane displacement of composite materials with curved fibers, addressing the challenges of variable angle tow composites. The integration of IG-RZT with Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) functions ensures accuracy and efficiency in predicting displacement and stress distributions in VAT composite structures.

An experimental implementation of inverse finite element method for real-time shape and strain sensing of composite and sandwich structures

A. Kefal et al.

Summary: This study experimentally applies the inverse finite element method (iFEM) for real-time displacement reconstruction of a moderately thick wing-shaped sandwich structure using a network of strain sensors and the RZT algorithm. The results show that the iFEM approach demonstrates good consistency with traditional DIC/FEM analysis and experimental strain results.

A combined experimental/numerical study on deformation sensing of sandwich structures through inverse analysis of pre-extrapolated strain measurements

M. A. Abdollahzadeh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the practical shape-sensing capability of an enhanced iFEM formulation on moderately thick sandwich plates/shells, using a novel four-node inverse-shell element iRZT4 to discretize the governing equations and coupling it with a polynomial-based strain pre-extrapolation technique for highly precise prediction. The results show that using a sparse sensor placement model for iRZT4 discretization paired with the polynomial smoothing approach leads to the most precise, efficient, and reliable deformation reconstruction for moderately thick sandwich structures.

A smoothed iFEM approach for efficient shape-sensing applications: Numerical and experimental validation on composite structures

Adnan Kefal et al.

Summary: The smoothed inverse finite element method (iFEM((s))) combines the inverse finite element method (iFEM) and the smoothing element analysis (SEA) for real-time displacement field reconstruction using strain-sensor measurements. This method is validated for shape sensing in multilayered composite and sandwich structures. By incorporating refined zigzag theory (RZT), the approach accurately models through-the-thickness displacement distributions and accurately predicts structural shapes.
