Priority control sequence of 34 typical pollutants in effluents of Chinese wastewater treatment plants

Summary: This study identified the priority control sequence of pollutants in wastewater treatment plant effluents by considering their occurrence frequency, concentration, removal rate, and in vitro and in vivo toxicity. The top 5 pollutants were found to be ethynyl estradiol, 17β-estradiol, estrone, diclofenac, and atrazine. In addition, the synergistic effects between pollutants were also evaluated, and pollutants like ofloxacin and acetaminophen were found to have significant interactions with other pollutants. This study sheds new light on the management and control of wastewater water quality.

Environmental factors shaping the gut microbiome in a Dutch population

Summary: This study analyzed the gut microbiome of 8,208 individuals from the Netherlands and found that the microbiome is primarily shaped by the environment and cohabitation. Only about 6.6% of microbial taxa are heritable, while around 48.6% of taxa are significantly influenced by cohabitation. Additionally, the study identified numerous associations between the microbiome and health, diet, socioeconomic factors, and early-life and current exposome.

The study found differences in consumption levels during holiday weeks and proposed a framework for selecting suitable biomarkers for intake estimation.

A nationwide wastewater-based assessment of metformin consumption across Australia

Summary: This study used a wastewater-based epidemiological approach to estimate the use of metformin in different populations across Australia and compared the results with traditional surveys and prescription data. The findings show that metformin use is associated with the prevalence of type 2 diabetes, geographical regions, and socioeconomic factors. The results can be used to develop targeted public health strategies to reduce the burden of type 2 diabetes.

Effects of three contraceptive methods on depression and sexual function: An ancillary study of the ECHO randomized trial

It also examined seasonal variations among 14 treatment plants and weekday/weekend drug use patterns. Alcohol, nicotine, and cannabis had the highest estimated per capita consumption, while Istanbul's location on a heroin trafficking route contributed to high heroin consumption levels. No significant seasonal consumption differences were observed for all substances due to Istanbul's status as a business hub and tourist destination throughout the year.

Contribution of sewage to occurrence of phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors in natural water

Summary: The study aimed to compare virus recovery and detection methods, detect and quantify SARS-CoV-2 genetic material in two sewersheds in Southern Nevada, and understand the link between COVID-19 incidence/prevalence and wastewater concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 RNA. Different methods and target water matrices led to varying virus recovery rates and sample volumes, impacting sensitivity and reported concentrations. Composite sampling showed a significant increase in concentration compared to grab samples, indicating diurnal variability in SARS-CoV-2 signal. Detection and quantification of genetic markers in sewage showed comparability with public health data in early pandemic stages.
