Priority control sequence of 34 typical pollutants in effluents of Chinese wastewater treatment plants

Ruonan He et al.

Summary: This study identified the priority control sequence of pollutants in wastewater treatment plant effluents by considering their occurrence frequency, concentration, removal rate, and in vitro and in vivo toxicity. The top 5 pollutants were found to be ethynyl estradiol, 17β-estradiol, estrone, diclofenac, and atrazine. In addition, the synergistic effects between pollutants were also evaluated, and pollutants like ofloxacin and acetaminophen were found to have significant interactions with other pollutants. This study sheds new light on the management and control of wastewater water quality.

Infectious mimics of rheumatoid arthritis

Vikas Sharma et al.

Summary: Rheumatoid arthritis can have various infectious mimics, so it is important to rule out infections in diagnosis. Symptoms such as travel history, fever, rash, genital ulcers, and urethral discharge can provide diagnostic clues. Treatment mainly consists of antimicrobial agents, analgesics, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Environmental factors shaping the gut microbiome in a Dutch population

R. Gacesa et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the gut microbiome of 8,208 individuals from the Netherlands and found that the microbiome is primarily shaped by the environment and cohabitation. Only about 6.6% of microbial taxa are heritable, while around 48.6% of taxa are significantly influenced by cohabitation. Additionally, the study identified numerous associations between the microbiome and health, diet, socioeconomic factors, and early-life and current exposome.

Exploring antibiotic consumption between urban and sub-urban catchments using both parent drugs and related metabolites in wastewater-based epidemiology

Jianfa Gao et al.

Summary: Consumption of antibiotics and the spread of antimicrobial resistance are closely related. This study used wastewater-based epidemiology to evaluate antibiotic consumption in different urban and suburban areas in China. The results showed variations in antibiotic consumption among locations, and the use of parent-to-metabolite ratios for estimating consumption showed potential.

Wastewater surveillance for 168 pharmaceuticals and metabolites in a WWTP: Occurrence, temporal variations and feasibility of metabolic biomarkers for intake estimation

Lei Duan et al.

Summary: Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is widely used to estimate public health conditions, including the consumption of certain substances. This study in a wastewater treatment plant in Beijing measured a wide range of pharmaceuticals and metabolites, evaluating their suitability as biomarkers for consumption estimation. The study found differences in consumption levels during holiday weeks and proposed a framework for selecting suitable biomarkers for intake estimation.

Assessment of correlations between sildenafil use and comorbidities and lifestyle factors using wastewater-based epidemiology

Xue-Ting Shao et al.

Summary: This study revealed high consumption of sildenafil and illicit use being greater than prescription use in China. Regional differences in usage were observed, with higher prevalence in Northern China, possibly due to lifestyle and socioeconomic factors. Sildenafil use was associated with gout, hypertension, smoking, and drinking, as well as certain demographic factors such as age structure, internet use, marriage rates, and unemployment rate.

Summary: This study reviews and discusses the modeling of emerging contaminants in aquatic environments, critically evaluating the principles, mathematical derivations, development, and applications of various models. Recommendations for improving data quality, monitoring planning, model development, and applications are also provided. The outcomes of this review can lay down a future framework for a comprehensive modeling approach to effectively manage water resources impacted by rising levels of emerging contaminants.

A nationwide wastewater-based assessment of metformin consumption across Australia

Dan Yang et al.

Summary: This study used a wastewater-based epidemiological approach to estimate the use of metformin in different populations across Australia and compared the results with traditional surveys and prescription data. The findings show that metformin use is associated with the prevalence of type 2 diabetes, geographical regions, and socioeconomic factors. The results can be used to develop targeted public health strategies to reduce the burden of type 2 diabetes.

Hongxin Mu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the distribution, source, and ecological risk of PFASs in municipal wastewater treatment plants in China. The results showed spatial differences in the composition and concentrations of PFASs in the influents and effluents, with low removal rates. However, the risk to aquatic organisms from PFASs in the effluents was found to be low.

Investigation of temporal illicit drugs, alcohol and tobacco trends in Istanbul city: Wastewater analysis of 14 treatment plants

F. Asicioglu et al.

Summary: The study analyzed drugs in wastewater in Istanbul city over four periods, estimating the consumption of illicit drugs, tobacco, and alcohol. It also examined seasonal variations among 14 treatment plants and weekday/weekend drug use patterns. Alcohol, nicotine, and cannabis had the highest estimated per capita consumption, while Istanbul's location on a heroin trafficking route contributed to high heroin consumption levels. No significant seasonal consumption differences were observed for all substances due to Istanbul's status as a business hub and tourist destination throughout the year.

Early-pandemic wastewater surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in Southern Nevada: Methodology, occurrence, and incidence/prevalence considerations

Daniel Gerrity et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare virus recovery and detection methods, detect and quantify SARS-CoV-2 genetic material in two sewersheds in Southern Nevada, and understand the link between COVID-19 incidence/prevalence and wastewater concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 RNA. Different methods and target water matrices led to varying virus recovery rates and sample volumes, impacting sensitivity and reported concentrations. Composite sampling showed a significant increase in concentration compared to grab samples, indicating diurnal variability in SARS-CoV-2 signal. Detection and quantification of genetic markers in sewage showed comparability with public health data in early pandemic stages.
