Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Dry Eye Diagnosis and Care

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate health disparities in racial and ethnic minorities with dry eye. The study found that minorities had worse objective dry eye parameters and less prior dry eye care. They also had lower household income and less access to healthcare. The findings suggest that differential management by eye care providers and patient attitudes may contribute to these disparities.

Summary: This study compared the racial and ethnic distribution in randomized clinical trials (RCTs) of diabetic macular edema (DME) and macular edema from retinal vein occlusion (RVO) to the US Census data. The findings revealed a discrepancy between the RCTs and the US population, with overrepresentation of White participants and underrepresentation of Hispanic participants. These findings emphasize the need to recruit underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities to improve the external validity of trial results.

The roles of sex and gender in women's eye health disparities in the United States

Summary: In the United States, women are at a higher risk of developing vision impairment or serious eye diseases compared to men, with disparities in eye health due to both biological and social determinants. Summary: This study evaluated the racial representation in clinical trials leading to FDA drug approvals in ophthalmology from 2000 to 2020, finding that Black, Hispanic or Latinx, and other non-White participants were underrepresented compared to the expected distribution in the US. Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma Clinical Trials A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Summary: This study found that compared to White individuals, individuals from racial/ethnic minority groups had a very low participation rate in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) clinical trials despite higher prevalence among the disease population. Despite efforts to increase diversity, there was no significant increase in clinical trial participation among Black individuals, the most affected group by POAG. This disparity raises questions about the safety and efficacy of medical interventions for POAG and underscores the need for further research on enhancing diversity in clinical trials for this disease.
