Clarification of the dispersion mechanism of three typical chemical dispersants in lithium-ion battery (LIB) slurry

Zhilong Wang et al.

Summary: This paper mainly clarifies the dispersion mechanism of three typical chemical dispersants, including polyethylene glycol octylphenyl ether (Triton X-100, T-100), polyethylene pyrrolidone (PVP), and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), in lithium-ion battery (LIB) slurry. The optimal amounts of T-100, PVP, and CMC are selected based on the evaluation of the impedance of LIB slurry with different dispersant concentrations. The dispersion mechanism of each dispersant is verified using SEM and C element distribution images of LIB slurry, leading to the conclusion that CMC with an optimal amount of 1.5% is the most effective in promoting the formation of conductive paths and CB-coated LiCoO2 network structure in LIB slurry, thus having potential to improve the performance of LIB.

Higher-order polysulfides induced thermal runaway for 1.0 Ah lithium sulfur pouch cells

Feng-Ni Jiang et al.

Summary: Comprehensive analyses of thermal runaway mechanisms are crucial for the safe operation of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. The thermal runaway of 1.0 Ah cycled Li-S pouch cells is attributed to the reactions between dissolved higher-order polysulfides and Li metal. Adding electrolyte significantly affects the thermal safety, with the 16-cycle pouch cell experiencing severe thermal runaway while the 45-cycle pouch cell remains stable. The presence of high-order polysulfides (Li2Sx > 6) and exothermic reactions with cycled Li contribute to the thermal runaway of Li-S pouch cells.

Lithium-storage properties of SiO2 nanotubes@C using carbon nanotubes as templates

Zixu Shi et al.

Summary: In this article, silica nanotubes were prepared using carbon nanotubes as a template, and then coated with a uniform carbon layer to enhance conductivity and electrochemical performance. The hollow structure of the nanotubes provides more insertion sites and migration channels for lithium ions, improving electrochemical performance. The composite material has a specific capacity of about 650 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 after 100 cycles, and about 400 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 100 cycles. Silica-based material is a competitive anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Particulate modification of lithium-ion battery anode materials and electrolytes

Zhiwei Li et al.

Summary: Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are rechargeable energy storage devices used in electronic equipment. However, their electrochemical properties need improvement and issues such as volume expansion, Li dendrite growth and unsatisfied solid electrolyte interphase hamper their development. Particulate modification methods have been proposed to enhance the performance of LIBs.

Understanding slurry mixing effects on the fast charging capability of lithium-ion battery cells: Methodology and case study

Korbinian Huber et al.

Summary: The slurry preparation of graphite anodes has an important influence on their performance and fast charging capability. This study introduces a method that investigates the impact of slurry preparation on electrode properties and fast charging performance using an in-situ lithium plating detection technique. The results show that high intensity mixing leads to an increased electrode tortuosity, which in turn deteriorates the fast charging performance.

In situ 4D distribution visualization of carbon-black volume fraction in cathode slurry of lithium-ion battery by multi-layered electrical resistance tomography (mlERT)

Natsuki Ikeno et al.

Summary: This study visualized the in situ 4D distribution of carbon black (CB) volume fraction in the cathode slurry of a lithium-ion battery using multi-layered electrical resistance tomography (mlERT). The distribution of CB in different dispersion states was observed under different mixing times and speeds. The results showed that mlERT has high accuracy in visualizing the distribution of CB in the cathode slurry and can provide valuable information about its behavior.

Mitsuhiro Takeno et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between the mixing process of electrode-slurry and the internal resistance of composite electrodes using rheological analysis and AC impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that the mixing process and AB content affect the formation of the AB network, influencing the performance of the composite electrodes.
