Grain shape effects in bed load sediment transport

Eric Deal et al.

Summary: Bed load sediment transport is a critically important mechanism in various contexts, but predictions of sediment flux are often imprecise. While many studies have focused on grain size variability as a source of uncertainty, the role of grain shape, which can influence transport rates, has been less investigated. This study shows that grain shape can significantly modify bed load transport rates, and proposes a shape-corrected sediment transport law. The findings improve predictions of sediment transport and reconcile theories developed for spherical particles with natural sediment grains.

Experimental modification of the internal solitary wave force exerted on a horizontal transverse cylinder due to wave-flow and vortex shedding

Shaodong Wang et al.

Summary: Based on experimental measurements, the modification formulas of empirical coefficients in ISW force calculations are proposed using parameter optimization methods. Various forces exerted on a horizontal transverse cylinder by an ISW and their description precision are obtained. The calculation accuracy of the ISW force is significantly improved using modified coefficients compared with constant coefficients, and some characteristic descriptions closer to the actual processes are achieved, further improving the understanding of the temporal and spatial features of the ISW acting on structural objects.

Simultaneous measurements of inertial acceleration and flow structures during coarse-grain entrainment under steady currents

Yushu Xie et al.

Summary: An instrumented smart sediment particle (SSP) is used to study the entrainment of coarse grains on a rough bed. Acceleration and flow structures are analyzed during the entrainment process using electronic sensors and particle tracking velocimetry (PTV). The results show that the obstruction by bed roughness leads to larger acceleration and longer duration of motion. The analysis of instantaneous flow structures suggests that the occurrence and persistence of specific flow patterns are crucial for energy transfer and complete entrainment.

Terminal velocity and drag coefficient for spherical particles

Haim Kalman et al.

Summary: The study reviewed empirical correlations and experimental works on the relationship between drag coefficient (C-D) of spheres with Reynolds number (Re) and Re with Archimedes number (Ar), and found the best-fit correlations for experimental results. New correlations for Re-Ha and C-D-Ar were also established, with the latter being easier to use than the common C-D-Re curve.

An improved formula for incipient sediment motion in vegetated open channel flows

Xiang Wang et al.

Summary: A new formula is developed to predict the critical flow velocity for incipient sediment motion in the presence of vegetation, taking into account the influence of vegetation drag. The formula shows agreement with existing experimental data and can be extended to scenarios with submerged vegetation.

Bedload transport analysis using image processing techniques

Alexander A. Ermilov et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel image-based method, the Video-based Bedload Tracker (VBT), for quantifying gravel bedload transport. By combining two different techniques, VBT provides detailed statistics of individual particle velocity and size data. The method has been tested and found to be able to set the correct parameter values easily through visual evaluation and literature. The applicability of VBT in the field is discussed, and a statistical filter is provided to account for suspended sediment and air bubbles.

Bedload transport: beyond intractability

Basil Gomez et al.

Summary: This passage discusses four distinct bedload transport regimes in river systems and argues against the pursuit of a universal formula. It suggests the use of data-driven approaches to reveal nonlinear trends and the development of idiomatic relations that embrace the specificity of rivers in each transport regime.

Influence of aspect ratio and arrangement direction on the shear behavior of ellipsoids

Weichen Sun et al.

Summary: This work investigates the macroscopic and microscopic behaviors of ellipsoids under triaxial tests using 3D discrete element method (DEM) simulation. It proposes a novel stress servo-controlled periodic boundary condition to avoid boundary effects. The study explores the shape features and initial arrangement directions of ellipsoids, as well as their macroscopic properties and occurrence of stick-slips. The impact of the initial arrangement direction on the coordination number and contact force chains is demonstrated, and the anisotropy coefficients of the entire contact network are analyzed to understand the microscopic roots of macroscopic behavior.

Experimental study on vertical water entry of twin spheres side-by-side

Xu Wang et al.

Summary: The experiment investigates the cavity dynamics and trajectories of twin spheres vertically entering water side-by-side at different time intervals and lateral distances. The results show that the interaction between the spheres changes with the increase of time interval and lateral distance, affecting the motion characteristics of the second water-entry sphere.
