Distribution and densities of fish larvae species with contrasting life histories as a function of oceanographic variables in the deep-water region of the southern Gulf of Mexico

Dauden-Bengoa Gonzalo et al.

Summary: We studied larval occurrence and density of six fish species in the deep-water region of the southern Gulf of Mexico and their relationship with oceanographic variables. The results showed that larval presence of the neritic species indicated offshore cross-shelf transport to oceanic waters, which could lead to mortality. The density of specific fish species was found to be related to different oceanographic variables, suggesting different ecological patterns and processes for different species.

Daily vertical distribution and diet of Cyclothone braueri (Gonostomatidae) in the Polcevera submarine canyon (Ligurian Sea, north-western Mediterranean)

Antonia Granata et al.

Summary: This study investigated the diel feeding pattern of Cyclothone braueri in Polcevera submarine canyon. The study found that the fish mainly preyed on calanoid copepods, with Pleuromamma abdominalis, Neocalanus gracilis, Pleuromamma gracilis, and Euchaeta acuta being the main prey. The study also found that the fish fed primarily in the morning and afternoon in the upper mesopelagic zone (200-400m). This study confirmed the high abundance and biomass of C. braueri in Polcevera canyon compared to open ocean waters and raised questions about how the presence of the canyon affects the migratory and trophic behaviors of this mesopelagic fish.

Interannual summer biodiversity changes in ichthyoplankton assemblages of the Strait of Sicily (Central Mediterranean) over the period 2001-2016

Bernardo Patti et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interannual fluctuations in ichthyoplankton assemblages in the Strait of Sicily, identifying a decreasing trend in larval abundance and taxonomic richness. However, there was no significant linear trend in the compositional changes of the larval assemblage. The study also revealed the importance of oceanographic conditions, such as salinity, surface temperature, and surface currents, in modulating biodiversity indices.

Connectivity of coastal and neritic fish larvae to the deep waters

Jesus C. Compaire et al.

Summary: The study conducted multiple ichthyoplankton cruises and backward tracking experiments in the western Gulf of Mexico to investigate the connectivity of coastal and neritic fish larvae. Distribution patterns showed higher abundance of larvae at oceanic stations during specific cruises, and simulations confirmed that larvae from coastal and neritic species mainly originated from northwestern shelf provinces. Circulation models were found to be valuable tools for studying dispersal pathways of neritic species when considering similar spatial and temporal scales used in the study.

Signals from the deep-sea: Genetic structure, morphometric analysis, and ecological implications of Cyclothone braueri (Pisces, Gonostomatidae) early life stages in the Central Mediterranean Sea

Marco Torri et al.

Summary: Cyclothone braueri is a widely distributed fish species in the mesopelagic zone, with a significant impact on ecological processes. The study revealed geographically distinct morphotypes of C. braueri related to different nutritional conditions, with body depth emerging as an appropriate morphometric parameter for detecting larval condition. Molecular analysis showed moderate genetic divergence in the fish population, with recurring phylogroups not geographically separated.
