Stem Cell Therapy in Diabetic Polyneuropathy: Recent Advancements and Future Directions

Shamima Akter et al.

Summary: Diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) is a common but neglected complication of long-term diabetes, and there is no cure for it currently. Cell therapy may be an important option for DPN treatment. This review discusses the epidemiology, classification, and treatment options of DPN, with a focus on cell-based therapies using various types of stem cells. Cryotherapy is also found to be significant in treating DPN. These findings contribute to the development of more targeted, accurate, effective, and safe therapies for reducing DPN. Cell-based therapy may provide a permanent solution for the treatment and management of diabetes-induced neuropathy.

A Critical Review on the Potency of Phytoconstituents in the Management of COVID-19

Kannan Raman et al.

Summary: Natural products and their derivatives have been traditionally used as therapeutic agents due to their diverse chemical structures and biochemical actions. They play a crucial role in developing less toxic and more effective drugs. Phytoconstituents, such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and terpenoids, have shown to be beneficial in treating viral diseases and inhibiting the development of SARS-CoV-2. The therapeutic importance of compounds isolated from medicinal plants and herbs, such as Curcumin, Leptodactylone, Ginsenoside-Rb1, Lycorine, and Amentoflavone, against SARS-CoV-2 is highlighted in this review.

Mohammad Imtiaz Nur et al.

Summary: This comparative study examined the prevalence and factors associated with mental health problems among COVID-19 vaccine receivers and nonreceivers in Bangladesh. The study found that vaccine receivers had a lower prevalence of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Risk factors for mental health problems included female gender, chronic condition, smoking status, and alcohol consumption.

Intermittent protein restriction protects islet 13 cells and improves glucose homeostasis in diabetic mice

Siying Wei et al.

Summary: This study explored the effectiveness of intermittent protein restriction (IPR) in diabetes control and found that it can significantly reduce hyperglycemia and improve the number and function of pancreatic islet β cells. Furthermore, IPR can reduce glucose production in the liver and enhance insulin signaling in skeletal muscle.

Antenatal depression among women with gestational diabetes mellitus: a pilot study

Sa'dia Tasnim et al.

Summary: This study investigates the prevalence of depressive symptoms among Bangladeshi pregnant women diagnosed with GDM. It is found that depression was detectable in 36.2% subjects. In addition, a history of reproductive health-related issues (i.e., abortion, neonatal death) and uncontrolled glycemic status were associated with increased risk of depressive disorders.

Adiponectin receptor agonist AdipoRon improves skeletal muscle function in aged mice

Priya Balasubramanian et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia, the loss of skeletal muscle function with age, significantly reduces independence and quality of life. However, there are currently no pharmacological interventions for sarcopenia. In this study, AdipoRon, a pan-adiponectin receptor agonist, was found to improve muscle function in male mice by affecting skeletal muscle metabolism and tissue remodeling. The treatment also showed positive effects in young mice and nonhuman primate cultured cells, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic agent for sarcopenia in clinical application.

Role of Adiponectin Receptor 1 in Promoting Nitric Oxide-Mediated Flow-Induced Dilation in the Human Microvasculature

Katie E. Cohen et al.

Summary: This study found that chronic administration of exogenous adiponectin can restore nitric oxide as the mediator of flow-induced dilation in arterioles from patients with coronary artery disease. The Adiponectin Receptor 1 (AdipoR1) plays a critical role in adiponectin-induced NO signaling during shear. Additionally, osmotin, a plant-derived protein, showed similar effects to adiponectin.
