Impact of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) on antimicrobial activity of new β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor combinations and on virulence of Escherichia coli isolates

Ashraf A. A. Kadry et al.

Summary: This study assessed the inhibitory activity of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and their impact on new beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations. Results showed that SCFAs have an inhibitory effect on pathogens and can restore the susceptibility of isolates to beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitors. Furthermore, SCFAs influence bacterial growth and virulence in a pH and concentration-dependent manner.

Vitamin B12 produced by Cetobacterium somerae improves host resistance against pathogen infection through strengthening the interactions within gut microbiota

Xiaozhou Qi et al.

Summary: This study found that the effect of probiotics in enhancing host resistance to pathogen infections depended on the function of -B-12 produced by an anaerobic indigenous gut microbe, Cetobacterium. Furthermore, as a gut microbial regulator, -B-12 exhibited the ability to strengthen the interactions within the gut microbiota and gut barrier tight junctions, thereby improving host resistance against pathogen infection.

Probiotic BioPlus® PS modulate shrimp-tilapia polyculture pond soil microbiome and exhibit bioremediation potential

Hugo Mendes de Oliveira et al.

Summary: The effects of the probiotic BioPlus (R) PS on shrimp-tilapia polyculture pond soil were evaluated using physical-chemical analysis, metagenomics, and Pfeiffer circular chromatography. The results showed a significant reduction in organic matter, oxidizable carbon, and potential acidity after applying the probiotic. Metagenomics demonstrated that the probiotic increased alpha diversity and decreased the abundance of Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Pfeiffer chromatography showed characteristics associated with higher quality soils and higher enzymatic activity in samples receiving higher doses.

The application and future of biofloc technology (BFT) in aquaculture industry: A review

Young-Bin Yu et al.

Summary: This review discusses the potential application of biofloc technology (BFT) in future aquaculture, as an innovative alternative to traditional methods. Extensive research is being conducted on the use of BFT for breeding and raising various aquatic species by promoting microbial growth and maintaining water quality. Factors such as suspended solids, turbidity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity, stocking density, and light should be considered for the efficient and sustainable use of BFT. The integration of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Internet of Things (IoT) with BFT can enhance productivity and ensure the growth and health of organisms through real-time monitoring with sensors.

Hemato-immunological parameters can be influenced by microalgae addition and fish feed supplementation in the integrated rearing of Pacific white shrimp and juvenile Nile tilapia using biofloc technology

Vitor F. Silva et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of microalgae addition and fish feed supplementation on hemato-immunological parameters of Pacific white shrimp and juvenile Nile tilapia cultured using biofloc technology. Results showed that adding microalgae and fish feed enhanced the immune status of shrimp, increasing total hemocyte count and serum protein concentration. Providing fish feed improved the nutritional status of fish, increasing circulating monocytes, and possibly improving erythrocyte stability when microalgae was added.

Exploration and verification of the feasibility of the sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification integrated biomass-based heterotrophic denitrification systems for wastewater treatment: From feasibility to application

Baorui Liang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification integrated with biomass-based heterotrophic denitrification system (SBD) is an efficient way to remove nitrate from wastewater, showing advantages such as shortening start-up period, reducing sulfate productivity, and maintaining good denitrification performance. The optimal filter for the SBD system was a mixture of elemental sulfur powder, shell powder, corncob powder, and sawdust powder, with an average nitrate reduction rate of 420 mg NO3-N.L-1.d(-1) achieved at the end of the study. Major autotrophs in the SBD systems included Thermomonas, Ferritrophicum, and Thiobacillus, while major heterotrophs included Saprospiraceae, Ferruginibacter, Dokdonella, and Simplicispira, indicating the feasibility and practicality of the SBD system for nitrate removal from wastewater.

Effects of aquaculture waste feeds and antibiotics on marine benthic ecosystems in the Mediterranean Sea

Belen Gonzalez-Gaya et al.

Summary: Intensive aquaculture generates organic waste and antibiotics that impact the benthic ecosystems in the Mediterranean Sea. The study reveals that these substances alter sediment properties, accumulate in wild fauna, affect microbial communities, and contribute to antibiotic resistance genes. This research highlights the rapid alteration of habitat and biodiversity in Mediterranean benthic ecosystems due to aquaculture waste and antibiotic residues.

Improvement of aquaculture water quality by mixed Bacillus and its effects on microbial community structure

Xue Li et al.

Summary: Microbial remediation, especially the use of probiotics, is increasingly popular for improving water quality and maintaining aquatic animal health. In this study, mixed Bacillus strains were applied to a Crucian carp aquaculture system, and it was found that the addition of Bacillus megaterium and Bacillus subtilis showed better results in improving water quality than Bacillus megaterium and Bacillus coagulans. The addition of mixed Bacillus increased bacterial diversity and decreased fungal diversity, while also promoting bacteria related to nitrogen and phosphorus removal and suppressing pathogenic bacteria and fungi. The primary environmental factors affecting the microbial community in aquaculture water were found to be NH4+-N, NO2--N, and TP.

Opportunistic diseases in marine eukaryotes: Could Bacteroidota be the next threat to ocean life?

Jennifer Hudson et al.

Summary: Bacteria within the phylum Bacteroidota can cause devastating disease outbreaks in marine eukaryotic hosts, with Tenacibaculum and Aquimarina being the most common pathogens. These bacteria typically have an opportunistic lifestyle and can act as secondary pathogens or be involved in polymicrobial diseases. Environmental stressors, especially those affecting coral, macroalgae, and fish, are often associated with the diseases caused by Bacteroidota. Key virulence traits include the production of adhesins and host tissue-degrading enzymes.

Assessing nutrient budgets and environmental impacts of coastal land-based aquaculture system in southeastern China

Ping Yang et al.

Summary: Aquaculture can lead to serious environmental pollution in coastal areas. Nutrient budget analysis in land-based aquaculture ponds can help understand the fate of nutrients and aid sustainable management. In this study, nitrogen and phosphorus budgets in shrimp monoculture ponds were analyzed, showing commercial feed as the main input and biomass harvesting and sedimentation as major outputs. Drainage from the ponds contributed to nutrient discharge into the river estuary, and unresolved factors like volatilization and seepage were identified affecting the accuracy of the nutrient budgets.
