Fluorine-free water-based Ni-rich positive electrodes and their performance in pouch- and 21700-type cells

S. Radloff et al.

Summary: Substantial progress has been made in the lab-scale aqueous processing of Ni-rich cathode electrodes, and now it needs to be proven in production-scale to deliver competitive performance cells. This study successfully scaled up a carboxymethyl cellulose and styrene-butadiene rubber based electrode-coating recipe from lab-scale to production-scale, demonstrating homogeneous mass loading and excellent processability. Challenges such as slurry pH control and mixing/coating time adjustment were overcome. The pilot-scale cathode electrodes with high areal capacities were tested in pouch and cylindrical cells, showing promising capacity retention after thousands of cycles.

Effects of Tab Design in 21700 Li-Ion Cells: Improvements of Cell Impedance, Rate Capability, and Cycling Aging

Thomas Waldmann et al.

Summary: In this study, the tab design of Li-ion cells with the industrially relevant 21700 format was experimentally investigated. The effects of tab design on cell performance were observed through systematic variation of the tab design. The results showed that cells with a multitab design exhibited reduced impedance, improved charging rate capability, increased cycle stability, and enhanced charge throughput. X-ray computed tomography revealed that the improved cycle life was attributed to the reduction of inhomogeneities in the jellyrolls. Comparative analysis with cells from other studies provided insights into the magnitude of the effects of tab design variation.

Interfacial kinetics and low-temperature behavior of spheroidized natural graphite particles as anode for Li-ion batteries

Irene Ruggeri et al.

Summary: The research indicates that different milling conditions significantly affect the rate of Li+ intercalation and the kinetics of charge-transfer reaction. The surface properties of graphite particles mainly determine the rate of lithiation reaction, with particles containing a large amount of prismatic and defect-rich surfaces promoting faster Li+ intercalation.

Influence of Laser Structuring and Calendering of Graphite Anodes on Electrode Properties and Cell Performance

Lucas Hille et al.

Summary: This study explores the influence of calendering and laser structuring on the pore structure and electrochemical performance of electrodes. Laser structuring was found to release superficial pore clogging caused by calendering and to result in binder agglomerates on the electrode surfaces. Structured electrodes showed higher porosities than unstructured counterparts, but no significant change in the pore size distribution was detected. Electrochemical impedance spectra revealed increasing ionic resistances and tortuosities for decreasing electrode porosities. Laser structuring significantly reduced the diffusion limitations of lithium-ion at all porosity levels. Furthermore, electrode structuring showed potential for improving performance at high currents.

Summary: Ion transport limitation is a well-known problem that occurs when the energy density of a battery is increased. In this study, a pulsed nanosecond laser machining method is proposed, which aims at material-preserving surface treatment of the electrodes. The method improves the rate capability of the electrodes and reduces cell overpotentials.

Enabling Fast-Charging Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes: Influence of Spheroidization on Natural Graphite

Marilena Mancini et al.

Summary: Excellent fast-charging performance is crucial for lithium-ion batteries used in automotive applications. This study investigates the rational particle design for active materials within electrodes to minimize kinetic limitations, particularly in the anode. The research shows that the surface and bulk particle properties are strongly influenced by the spheroidization conditions, which in turn affect the electrochemical performance, especially the lithium-intercalation rate. The findings demonstrate the importance of optimizing particle characteristics during spheroidization in developing fast-charging lithium-ion batteries.
