Structural and chemical changes in pyrogenic organic matter aged in a boreal forest soil

Jari Hyvaluoma et al.

Summary: This study utilized X-ray microtomography and elemental analysis to investigate the chemical and structural changes in PyOM formed during prescribed burning events and aged for 1-71 years in a boreal forest soil. The results showed changes in elemental composition occurred at decadal timescales, and a steady state was reached approximately 30 years after PyOM formation. Structural analysis revealed effects of aging on the pore structure, such as surface coating layers, pore fillings, and fractures.

The post-fire shift of temperate white pine-birch forest to boreal balsam fir forest in eastern Canada: climate-fire implications

Serge Payette et al.

Summary: Extensive 14C dating and botanical identification were used to reconstruct the successional pathways of a balsam fir forest site. The site experienced continuous fire disturbance over the last 9000 years, with at least 26 fires occurring at a mean interval of 330 years. The forest composition changed over time, with a shift from white pine forest to balsam fir forest, likely due to progressive cooler and wetter conditions.

Fire effects on the persistence of soil organic matter and long-term carbon storage

Adam F. A. Pellegrini et al.

Summary: Fire disturbances in ecosystems challenge the paradigm of frequent disturbances depleting soil organic matter carbon, as recent studies show that fires can increase soil organic matter stability and slow decomposition rates, offsetting aboveground biomass carbon losses.

Mineral Soils Are an Important Intermediate Storage Pool of Black Carbon in Fennoscandian Boreal Forests

Johan A. Eckdahl et al.

Summary: Approximately 40% of carbon in the earth's land vegetation and soil is stored in the boreal region. Pyrogenic carbon (PyC), known as fire-altered carbon, plays a significant role in forest ecosystem functioning and contributes to the carbon transport to sediments. This study found an average increase of black carbon (BC), a subset of PyC, in Swedish wildfires in 2018, but was unable to determine the drivers of its production and transport. Mineral soils are suggested to serve as an important storage pool for BC and can buffer short and long-term BC cycling.

Mapping organic layer thickness and fuel load of the boreal forest in Alberta, Canada

Chelene C. Hanes et al.

Summary: Forest organic layers are important for predicting fire behavior, emissions, and effects models. Machine learning approaches were used to develop maps of organic layer thickness and fuel load, with random forests being the best method for modeling their spatial distribution.

Spatial variation of surface soil carbon in a boreal forest - the role of historical fires, contemporary vegetation, and hydro-topography

Vilde L. Haukenes et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the spatial variation of boreal forest soil carbon (C) stocks is significant, influenced by factors such as fire frequency, ecosystem productivity, vegetation attributes, and hydro-topography.

Effect of repeated burnings, fire and charcoal characteristics on natural charcoal re-combustion in a Mediterranean environment as evaluated in laboratory burning experiments

Francesco Bartoli et al.

Summary: Pyrogenic carbon (PyC) is a refractory compound in soil organic carbon and its loss can be influenced by fire events, fuel characteristics, and the number of burnings. Empirical results showed that fire can play a major role in charcoal degradation in Mediterranean forests, especially in environments with frequent fire intervals.
