Charging Optimization of Lithium-Ion Batteries Based on Charge Transfer Limitation and Mass Transport Limitation

Wenlong Xie et al.

Summary: Fast charging of lithium-ion batteries is crucial for electric vehicle commercialization and addressing range anxiety. However, high charging currents can lead to lithium deposition on the anode and degradation reactions, decreasing battery life. This study develops a simplified electrochemical-thermal model to capture the behavior of lithium plating and proposes two charging algorithms to suppress plating. The algorithms consider constraints on plating overpotential and surface concentration. The proposed strategies are experimentally validated to significantly reduce charging time and delay battery aging.

Predicting Capacity Fade in Silicon Anode-Based Li-Ion Batteries

Harika Dasari et al.

Summary: Silicon anodes hold promise for use in lithium-ion batteries due to their high theoretical storage capacity and low discharge potential, but volume expansion issues can lead to capacity fade. By optimizing the electrolyte volume fraction and particle size, the performance of silicon anodes can be improved. Through simulations, it was found that different positive electrodes have varying effects on the behavior of silicon anode-based batteries.

Change in the half-cell open-circuit potential curves of silicon-graphite and nickel-rich lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide during cycle aging

Julius Schmitt et al.

Summary: The study experimentally investigated the aging invariance of the shape of both half-cell OCP curves of a commercial NMC-811/silicon-graphite cell, revealing that the OCP of NMC-811 remains unchanged while the OCP of silicon-graphite undergoes changes mainly due to a decrease in the relative capacity contribution of silicon. These findings suggest that changes in the shape of the OCP curve of silicon-graphite during cycle aging should be taken into consideration in electrical battery models used for full-cell aging diagnostics and state estimation algorithms in battery management systems.

Comprehensive Analysis of the Aging Behavior of Nickel-Rich, Silicon-Graphite Lithium-Ion Cells Subject to Varying Temperature and Charging Profiles

Markus Schindler et al.

Summary: This study found that balancing lifetime and energy density is crucial for material combinations incorporating silicon-graphite anodes and nickel-rich cathodes. The aging effects of silicon-graphite anodes are significantly influenced by the volume expansion of silicon, with even small variations in silicon content leading to notable changes in cell properties. Lower silicon content cells exhibited higher EFCs compared to their higher silicon counterparts.

Revealing the Failure Mechanism of Partially Lithiated Silicon-Dominant Anodes Based on Microscale Silicon Particles

Stefan Haufe et al.

Summary: The partial lithiation of silicon microparticles in LIB anodes is a promising material concept with high capacity and rate capability, but is currently limited by cycling stability and volume change issues, restricting its market potential. This study identifies the continuous formation of SEI as the main failure mechanism, while particle decoupling plays a role at low discharge voltages. Improving cell performance involves optimizing electronic particle connection and developing enhanced electrolyte systems or pre-lithiation strategies to enhance the cycle stability of silicon-based LIB cells.

Investigation of Lithium Ion Diffusion of Graphite Anode by the Galvanostatic Intermittent Titration Technique

Jong Hyun Park et al.

Summary: Graphite is commonly used as an anode material in commercial lithium-ion batteries due to its reversible lithium-ion storage capability and low electrode potential. However, the sluggish diffusion kinetics of graphite anodes limit the rate capability of lithium-ion batteries. The diffusion coefficient of lithium ions in commercial graphite anodes can be determined using a galvanostatic intermittent titration technique, revealing mixed phases during lithium intercalation/deintercalation.

Silicon/graphite composite anode with constrained swelling and a stable solid electrolyte interphase enabled by spent graphite

Qi Xu et al.

Summary: This study successfully prepared a Si/spent graphite composite through recycling of spent graphite, achieving uniform dispersion of Si nanoparticles in the graphite matrix and suppressing volume strain by tuning the Zeta potential. The composite electrode showed high initial discharge capacity and stable cycle life after 400 cycles. Defect-enriched spent graphite and oxygen-containing functional groups also positively influenced the electrode performance.
