Assessment of the co-combustion process of ammonia with hydrogen in a research VCR piston engine

Michal Pyrc et al.

Summary: The experimental research focused on a spark-ignition engine with variable compression ratio (VCR), adapted to dual-fuel operation, in which co-combustion of ammonia with hydrogen was conducted. The impact of the energy share of hydrogen co-combusted with ammonia on the engine's performance, stability, and emissions was assessed. Increasing the energy share of hydrogen to 12% resulted in improved ignition stability and combustion process, but also increased NO emissions.

Reduction of Piston Skirt Friction Using the Micro-scale Patterned Surface

Jongdae Kang et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to determine if applying a micro-pattern to the piston skirt can reduce piston friction. The roughness of ready-made pistons was reduced before etching the micro-scale pattern onto the skirt. The friction reduction effect of the piston was confirmed through engine experiments with different patterns.

Patterns-Based Coating of Piston Skirt for Added Benefits during Hydrodynamic Lubrication in Internal Combustion Engines

Ali Usman et al.

Summary: Friction is a significant research concern and most of the energy input into an internal combustion engine is wasted on overcoming it. This study combines surface texturing with coating methods to investigate the effects of pattern-based coating on friction in hydrodynamic lubrication. The results show a remarkable reduction in friction and encourage the development of pattern-based surface coatings.
