A Deeper Insight into the Interfacial Behavior and Structural Properties of Mixed DPPC/POPC Monolayers: Implications for Respiratory Health

Yingxue Geng et al.

Summary: The phase behavior and thermodynamic structure of mixed DPPC/POPC monolayers were investigated to understand the intermolecular interaction between DPPC and POPC molecules. It was found that POPC significantly influenced the phase behavior of the lipid domain structure. The decrease in compression modulus and the fluidization of the monolayers in the presence of POPC can be attributed to the intermolecular repulsion between DPPC and POPC. These findings provide insights into the role of different phospholipid components in the function of pulmonary surfactants at a molecular level.

In situ investigation of the oxidation of a phospholipid monolayer by reactive oxygen species

Alexander P. Fellows et al.

Summary: The oxidation of membrane lipids, which has been studied for decades, plays a significant role in biological systems. However, little is known about the specific structural consequences of oxidative action, especially in vivo. In this study, a combination of analytical techniques was used to gain insight into the oxidation of phospholipids by reactive oxygen species. The impact of oxidation on the structure, conformation, and intermolecular interactions within the membrane was revealed by monitoring surface tension and spectroscopic changes at the air-water interface.

Quantitative Evaluation on the Degradation Process of the Pulmonary Surfactant Monolayer When Exposed to Low-Level Ozone of Ambient Environment

Lin Qao et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the degradation process of a major component of pulmonary surfactant (PS), 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC), exposed to low-level ambient ozone. We found that low-level ozone can readily degrade POPC molecules and induce oxidation damage to unsaturated lipids, triggering lung inflammation.

Langmuir Trough Study of the Interactions of Tear Mimetic Eyedrop Formulation with Human Meibum Films

Petar Eftimov et al.

Summary: Meibomian gland disease is associated with deficiencies in meibum, and ophthalmic nanoemulsions have been developed to replenish meibum and improve its performance. The interactions between the nanoemulsion and meibum surface films can provide valuable insights into the therapeutic action of the nanoemulsion and the design of new ophthalmic formulations. The ingredients in the nanoemulsion complement the lipid constituents of the meibomian layers, resulting in enhanced continuity of the meibum film structure and improved spread and viscoelasticity. Nanoemulsions have great potential as a therapy for dry eyes.

Current approaches in lipid-based nanocarriers for oral drug delivery

Maria Plaza-Oliver et al.

Summary: Lipid-based nanocarriers have advantages like low toxicity and strong biocompatibility, making them ideal carriers for drugs with poor oral bioavailability. However, efficient oral drug delivery through these carriers is challenging due to multiple physicochemical barriers along the gastrointestinal tract. Rational design of nanocarriers can turn these limitations into opportunities, ultimately determining their future clinical success.

Thermodynamic and Mechanical Properties of DMPC/Cholesterol Mixed Monolayers at Physiological Conditions

Alan Banuelos-Frias et al.

Summary: The study found that cholesterol has various effects on DMPC/Cholesterol monolayers, including fluidization, condensing, and increased stiffness at different concentrations. These effects are more pronounced in pure water at pH around 6.6 compared to buffer at physiological pH = 7.4. All mixtures were found to be thermodynamically stable at specific surface pressures in both pure water and buffer solutions. Additionally, the study compared the stability of these mixtures with a fatty acid monolayer, suggesting that double chain lipids may be better suited for cell membrane formation.
