Potassium fertilization in the cultivation of sour passion fruit under irrigation strategies with brackish water

Francisco W. A. Pinheiro et al.

Summary: This research evaluated the physical and chemical quality of sour passion fruit under different saline water irrigation strategies and potassium doses. The results showed that continuous irrigation with water of 4.0 dS m(-1) in the flowering stage or throughout the vegetative and flowering stages reduced the yield and size of sour passion fruit. It is recommended to fertilize with 60% of potassium for producing sour passion fruits with larger polar diameter. Furthermore, it is feasible to irrigate sour passion fruit with water of 4.0 dS m(-1) in the flowering and fruiting stages and fertilize with 60% of the recommended potassium dose without losses in ascorbic acid and total soluble sugars.

Physicochemical, structural, and rheological characteristics of pectic polysaccharides from fresh passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa L.) peel

Lichao Zhao et al.

Summary: This study obtained four pectic polysaccharides (PFP-T, PFP-U, PFP-M, and PFP-UM) from fresh passion fruit peel using three-phase partitioning (TPP), ultrasound-assisted TPP (U-TPP), microwave-assisted TPP (M-TPP), and sequential ultrasound-microwave assisted TPP (UM-TPP) methods. The results showed that ultrasound/microwave treatments before TPP separation significantly affected the yields, physicochemical properties, and structural characteristics of the pectic polysaccharides, and improved their rheological properties. PFP-U obtained by U-TPP had the highest molar mass, shortest homogalacturonan backbone, most rhamnogalacturonan side chains, best thermal stability and viscoelastic behavior, while PFP-UM obtained through UM-TPP had the highest contents of total sugar and uronic acid and exhibited the best steady-state fluid property.

Hydrogen peroxide in the acclimation of colored-fiber cotton genotypes to salt stress

Luana L. de S. A. Veloso et al.

Summary: The excess of salts in irrigation water restricts agricultural exploitation in arid and semi-arid regions. Thus, searching for strategies of cultivation under salt stress conditions is important for the expansion of irrigated agriculture in these regions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the gas exchange and growth rates of naturally colored-fiber cotton genotypes irrigated with saline water and under exogenous foliar application of hydrogen peroxide concentrations.

Gas exchange and yield of grafted yellow passion fruit under salt stress and plastic mulching

Antonio G. de L. Souto et al.

Summary: The use of wild species of Passiflora as a rootstock and plastic film mulching can alleviate the negative effects of salt stress on yellow passion fruit. However, irrigation with high-salinity water reduced gas exchange and yield of yellow passion fruit.

Soil Salinity and Sodicity in Drylands: A Review of Causes, Effects, Monitoring, and Restoration Measures

Ilan Stavi et al.

Summary: Soil salinization and sodification are common processes in drylands caused by natural conditions or human activities. Mapping and monitoring saline soils is crucial, and knowledge on prevention, mitigation, and recovery of soil salinity and sodicity has significantly expanded over time.

Development of new high-salt tolerant bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes and insight into the tolerance mechanisms

Murat Aycan et al.

Summary: The study developed two new salt-tolerant bread wheats, 'Maycan' and 'Yildiz', which showed higher salt tolerance at the seedling stage compared to their parents. They also exhibited different tolerance mechanisms to other tested cultivars, providing an opportunity for their exploitation in modern bread wheat production.

Growth, photosynthetic pigments, and photochemical efficiency of sour passion fruit as a function of the cationic nature of water

Francisco Jean da Silva Paiva et al.

Summary: The study revealed that different electrical conductivity levels have an impact on the growth of sour passion fruit, regardless of the cationic nature of irrigation water. The use of salinized water with sodium promoted the synthesis of chlorophyll and carotenoids in the plants after 180 days. The distinct cationic natures of irrigation water did not affect the fluorescence variables of the sour passion fruit.
