Identification and Molecular Characterization of Four New Blastocystis Subtypes Designated ST35-ST38

Jenny G. Maloney et al.

Summary: Three recent studies found four novel sequences in mammalian hosts infected with Blastocystis, with B. lapemi as the most similar sequence. However, full-length ssu rRNA gene sequences were not available to confirm the validity of these new subtypes. This study used Nanopore MinION sequencing to obtain full-length reference sequences for each of the new subtypes, and confirmed their validity through phylogenetic analysis and pairwise distance comparisons. The proposed subtype designations for the novel sequences in this study are ST35-ST38, which will aid in future accurate sequence descriptions and studies of Blastocystis epidemiology and subtype diversity.

Faika Hassanein et al.

Summary: This study investigated the water quality and microbial infections in swimming pools in Alexandria, Egypt. The results showed that only a small percentage of the water samples met the Egyptian bacteriological standards, and the majority of the samples had parasitic contamination. Therefore, monitoring water quality and improving disinfection systems in swimming pools are necessary, along with promoting health education on hygiene behaviors before and during swimming.

Molecular characterization of Blastocystis and Entamoeba of muskoxen and sheep in Greenland

Christen Rune Stensvold et al.

Summary: The genetic diversity and host specificity of Blastocystis and Entamoeba in Greenland were studied for the first time. Blastocystis was more common than Entamoeba and both were common colonizers of large herbivorous mammals in Greenland. Multiple subtypes/lineages were observed, including some novel ones.

Identification and validation of novel Blastocystis subtype ST41 in a Colombian patient undergoing colorectal cancer screening

Carolina Hernandez-Castro et al.

Summary: Blastocystis sp. is a common intestinal protist in humans worldwide. The diversity of Blastocystis subtypes in humans is still being studied. In this research, a novel Blastocystis subtype ST41 was identified in a Colombian patient undergoing colorectal cancer screening. The full-length ssu rRNA gene sequence of the protist was determined using MinION long-read sequencing technology. The validity of the novel subtype was confirmed through phylogenetic and pairwise distance analyses. This study provides essential reference material for future experimental studies.

Occurrence and molecular characterization of Acanthamoeba, Naegleria fowleri and Blastocystis in water samples from various sources in Egypt

Rana Elseadawy et al.

Summary: PCR-testing and isolate sequencing were used to detect the prevalence and genotypes/subtypes of three neglected waterborne protists (Acanthamoeba, Naegleria fowleri, and Blastocystis) in water samples from various sources in Dakahlia governorate, Egypt. The results showed a high prevalence of Acanthamoeba throughout Egypt, with the highly pathogenic T4 genotype being the most identified type. Furthermore, a common T4 haplotype was found in water from Egypt and other countries on the Nile basin, suggesting the potential role of water in the transmission of Acanthamoeba keratitis in humans. The findings highlight the importance of revising the procedures for controlling these pathogens in water.

First Epidemiological Survey on the Prevalence and Subtypes Distribution of the Enteric Parasite Blastocystis sp. in Vietnam

Linh Do Ngoc Nguyen et al.

Summary: Despite being the most common enteric protozoan worldwide, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding the prevalence and subtype distribution of Blastocystis sp. in certain areas, particularly in Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam. This study conducted the first molecular epidemiological survey in Vietnam, which revealed a prevalence rate of 34.5% and identified several subtypes, including ST8, ST10, and ST14, not previously reported in the Southeast Asian population. The study also highlighted a high risk of zoonotic transmission, mainly from poultry and livestock.

Detection, Molecular Identification and Transmission of the Intestinal Protozoa Blastocystis sp. in Guinea from a Large-Scale Epidemiological Study Conducted in the Conakry Area

Timothe Guilavogui et al.

Summary: Blastocystis sp. is a common single-celled parasite that colonizes the digestive tract of 1-2 billion people worldwide. This study investigated the prevalence and subtype distribution of Blastocystis sp. in the Guinean population and identified five subtypes. The distribution of different subtypes was not significantly associated with symptomatic status, but consumption of drilling water was found to be a significant risk factor for infection. These findings highlight the need for prevention and control measures in the endemic geographical area.
