Measuring configural spatial knowledge: Individual differences in correlations between pointing and shortcutting

Chuanxiuyue He et al.

Summary: People use environmental knowledge to maintain a sense of direction in daily life. This knowledge is typically measured by having people point to unseen locations (judgments of relative direction) or navigate efficiently in the environment (shortcutting). However, few studies have directly tested the correlation between pointing and shortcutting performance.

Understanding cognitive maps from landmark and configurational representations

Noelle Chiau-Ru Chiang et al.

Summary: Previous studies on spatial cognition lack a behaviorally objective approach to capture the Euclidean qualities of configurations. This study combines subjective coding and an objective Gardony Map Drawing Analyzer (GMDA) technique to link landmark and survey representations, providing a more complete understanding. Participants explored a real aquatic environment, leading to ecologically valid results. The analysis reveals that lakes and cascades were the most commonly recalled and located landscape categories due to their sociopsychological meanings and physical salience. The GMDA results quantitatively measure configurational outputs, angle accuracy, and distance accuracy. The study finds that better landmark recall is associated with a better global perspective of the research site and highlights the importance of missing landmarks and directional information in constructing spatial representations.

The effect of sound environment on spatial knowledge acquisition in a virtual outpatient polyclinic

Donya Dalirnaghadeh et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of the sound environment on spatial knowledge acquisition in a virtual outpatient polyclinic. The results show that a combination of visual signage and sound environment has a positive effect on spatial knowledge acquisition. Signage alone cannot aid spatial knowledge in virtual outpatient polyclinics. Data suggests that landmarks associated with sound can compensate for the lack of visual landmarks, suggesting potential applications for users with visual disabilities in designing wayfinding systems.

Promoting passenger behaviour change with provision of occupancy information to help moderate train overcrowding: A cognitive work analysis approach

Jisun Kim et al.

Summary: This research uses Cognitive Work Analysis to systematically analyze passengers' behavior and related constraints in the environment. The study provides insights on promoting passenger behavior change, suggesting that providing various forms of support can better encourage passengers to choose less crowded carriages and trains.

User capabilities in eyes-free spatial target acquisition in immersive virtual reality environments

Huiyue Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, we systematically investigated user capabilities in eyes-free spatial target acquisition. The results show that high acquisition accuracy and low task load are achieved for target locations at specific horizontal and vertical angles, but a trade-off cannot be achieved between acquisition accuracy and task load for target locations at long distances from the user's body.
