Understanding the Fatigue Notch Sensitivity of High-Strength Steels through Fracture Toughness

Sergi Parareda et al.

Summary: This study introduces an innovative approach for selecting high-strength materials for fatigue dimensioning parts by considering fracture toughness and fatigue performance. Warm and hot forming processes enable the construction of high-strength parts with complex geometries, making them suitable for lightweight chassis in automotive and freight applications. The research shows that high-strength steels may experience a significant reduction in fatigue performance due to manufacturing defects, but fracture toughness can serve as an indicator of notch sensitivity with a strong correlation between fracture toughness and fatigue notch sensitivity. By combining fracture toughness measurements and fatigue resistance tests, the most fatigue-resistant materials can be quickly identified. Among the nine materials analyzed, warm-formed steels demonstrate promising characteristics for lightweight chassis construction with high fatigue resistance and fracture toughness exceeding the proposed fracture threshold of 250 kJ/m(2).

LIPSS and DLIP: From hierarchical to mutually interacting, homogeneous, structuring

A. Sikora et al.

Summary: This article reports an experimental study showing that it is possible to transition from a hierarchical to mutual interacting texturing where DLIP and LIPSS give rise to a novel, uniform texturing with a homogeneous morphology, highly regular periodicity, and low orientation dispersion. Furthermore, our approach allows for a significant reduction of the LIPSS period to approximately 0.45 lambda.

Ultra-Short Pulse Lasers for Microfabrication: A Review

Gediminas Raciukaitis

Summary: Ultra-short pulse lasers, with pulse durations in the picosecond and femtosecond range, are increasingly popular in precision laser microfabrication. They offer benefits in terms of ablation processes and non-linear interactions with materials, especially in transparent materials like glass. Developing technologies and tools have made laser processing more efficient and opened up unique opportunities for machining applications.

LIPSS-based functional surfaces produced by multi-beam nanostructuring with 2601 beams and real-time thermal processes measurement

P. Hauschwitz et al.

Summary: The combination of ultrashort high-energy pulsed laser system with exceptional beam quality and a novel Diffractive Optical Element (DOE) enables rapid production of large amounts of small points in a short time, achieving efficient photolithography processes. By adjusting parameters, these points can contain different types of Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structures (LIPSS) and real-time process control, showing promising applications in surface modification.

Insight into replication effectiveness of laser-textured micro and nanoscale morphology by injection molding

Adrian H. A. Lutey et al.

Summary: Detailed analysis and characterization of injection-molded polypropylene specimens produced with laser-textured molds shows good replication effectiveness, especially for surface morphologies with LIPSS oriented parallel to the injection direction. However, attention must be paid to the size and nature of defects for specific functional surfaces.
