The neurobiology of irritable bowel syndrome

Emeran A. Mayer et al.

Summary: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent disorder of brain-gut interactions, affecting 5-10% of the global population. The current diagnosis criteria focus on recurrent abdominal pain and altered bowel habits, but patients also experience non-painful abdominal discomfort, psychiatric conditions, and other pain-related symptoms. Recent research has revealed a comprehensive disease model of brain-gut-microbiome interactions, explaining the various symptoms of IBS. This model incorporates the gut connectome, enteric nervous system, brain alterations, and correlations with genetic, gastrointestinal, immune, and gut microbiome-related factors.

The epidemiology and impact of disorders of gut-brain interaction in Canada: Results from the Rome Foundation Global Epidemiologic Study

David M. Rodrigues et al.

Summary: This study used data from the Rome Foundation Global Epidemiology Study to explore the prevalence of 22 disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) in Canada. The results showed that the prevalence of DGBI in Canada is similar to other countries, with functional constipation, functional diarrhea, and unspecified functional bowel disorders being the most common. DGBI have a significant impact on the well-being of Canadians, highlighting the need for further research and education.

Summary: Based on two national Internet surveys, it is estimated that approximately 40% of US adults have a disorder of gut-brain interaction (DGBI), with higher prevalence among females and individuals under the age of 65. DGBI negatively impact quality of life and emotional well-being, and increase healthcare utilization.

Histamine Intolerance Originates in the Gut

Wolfgang J. Schnedl et al.

Summary: Histamine intolerance is primarily caused by a deficiency of the enzyme diamine oxidase in the gastrointestinal tract, leading to improper breakdown and absorption of histamine. Symptoms are non-specific and can affect the GI tract and other organs. Diagnosis is challenging but relies on detailed patient history and potentially low serum DAO values. Dietary intervention and supplementation with DAO capsules can help alleviate HIT symptoms.
