County-Based PM2.5 Concentrations' Prediction and Its Relationship with Urban Landscape Pattern

Summary: In this study, a random forest model integrating satellite top-of-atmosphere reflectance and four categories of supplemental parameters was developed to estimate PM2.5 concentrations in the Yangtze River Delta-Fujian region in east China. The analysis of landscape pattern indices derived from land classification images revealed a positive correlation between farmland, water bodies, and construction land with PM2.5 concentrations, while forests showed a negative correlation. Overall, landscape fragmentation, edge density, and diversity were positively correlated with PM2.5 pollution in the study region.

Spatiotemporal characteristics of NO2, PM2.5 and O3 in a coastal region of southeastern China and their removal by green spaces

Summary: Understanding the spatio-temporal characteristics of air pollutants is crucial for improving air quality. This study analyzed the characteristics of air pollutants in Fujian Province, China in 2015 and examined the influence of green space on pollutant concentrations. The results showed that PM2.5 and O3 were the main pollutants, with their importance varying by season. Significant differences in pollutant concentrations were observed between suburban and urban areas, emphasizing the importance of monitoring station distribution. Additionally, correlations between green space landscape patterns and air pollutants were found, suggesting that interconnected green spaces have the potential to improve air quality. Utilizing green space function regulations can effectively alleviate NO2 and PM2.5 pollution, but reducing O3 concentrations remains challenging.

Urban green space alone is not enough: A landscape analysis linking the spatial distribution of urban green space to mental health in the city of Chicago

Summary: Research shows that the spatial distribution of urban green space is as important as the quantity of green space for the mental health of urban residents. In Chicago, residents reported less psychological distress in urban landscapes with small-sized water bodies and larger distances between forested areas. Additionally, landscapes with a disaggregated distribution of many small green spaces had lower levels of psychological distress compared to landscapes with a single or a few large green spaces.

Is Population Density Associated with Non-Communicable Disease in Western Developed Countries? A Systematic Review

Summary: This systematic review examines the relationship between population density and non-communicable diseases (NCD) in Westernised countries. The findings suggest that high population density is associated with higher mortality rates and incidence of certain cancers, cardiovascular disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as asthma and club foot. In contrast, low population density is associated with diabetes incidence. The review also highlights the complex relationships between population density, the built environment, greenspace, and man-made exposures.

Air pollution, physical activity and health: A mapping review of the evidence

Summary: The study reviewed the empirical evidence on the links between air pollution and physical activity, finding that air pollution may decrease physical activity levels during high pollution episodes. Long-term exposure to air pollution might also diminish the health gains from physical activity. Public health modelling studies suggest that in most situations, the benefits of physical activity outweigh the risks of air pollution. However, evidence for low- and middle-income countries, sensitive subpopulations, and indoor air pollution is weak.

Measuring Neighborhood Landscapes: Associations between a Neighborhood's Landscape Characteristics and Colon Cancer Survival
